Hi All

Two silly :augie questions:

1. Should I have received a disc with the Mapsource software on? I only received the NT Europe Map disc or is it on that; and

2. Is there a preferred location for fitting on an 800gs and is it best just to use the auxillary socket for charging or hard wire into the bike?

Thanks.

I believe the Mapsource software is on the NT disc supplied John. That's all I got with mine but I haven't tried it yet. Rather I'm experimenting with Google Earth and Tyre as I've heard Mapsource can be a fag to use?

Don't know about the power socket for the 800 but I wired mine into the BMW supplied power socket under the headstock on my 1200GS. Wouldn't wire it directly to the battery if I could help it, not least of which because the BMW socket it switched anyway.

Hope that helps.

Disc - yeah 99% sure Mapsource was on the disc of my 660.

my mate (800gs owner) brought a plug/socket you plug into the canbus that gives you a switched live - I'm sure your local dealer will know which one. Works a treat on his (550) Zumo.

cheers

Not sure if you remember seeing mine on the white horse run last year

I brought a s/s U-bolt for an exhaust as the standard clamp was too small and drilled out the clamp slightly to allow the U-bolt through. The unit obscures the lower 1/2 of the taco, but most of the time, i'm in the top 1/2!

The height is just right to be fully visable above the tank bag. It's hard wired to the back of the accessory socket so the socket is free for charging phone, etc. The gps mounting cable run's out the back and follows the others though the headstock with a number of other cables. The spare cable is coiled up behind the battery.

If you want to come up to Oxford, give me a ping and i can show - or if you bring, help you fit.

Hi

Thanks for all the advice which gives me confidence to "have a go":augie

I am attemtping to "hardwire" my 660 into the socket based on zero experience so please excuse the next few simple questions!

1. The socket has two cables one brown and one red/green and the 660 has a red [with fuse] and black. Do I simply cut both socket wires and join to the two 660 wires to these wires and if so which colour goes with which; or

2. Is it something completely different in which case please do tell; or

3. Should I get the dealer to do!

Thanks.

Hi Replying to my own message as I have done some more reading on this site - I knew the answer was there somewhere just could not be bothered to look!

I see I can buy the CANBUS lead [what does CANBUS stand for?] and connext to the socket located on top of the batery. I noticed on another post that soldering is recomended - I do not solder [yet anyway] - so another simple question can I just use a normal electrical connector to connect the 660 to the CANBUS lead and then cover with PVC tape?

Thanks for any advice.

what does CANBUS stand for?

Or be bothered to look up Canbus it seems. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=CA...s=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a

Or how to solder.

Why not just trot along to BuMW and buy one of their ready made leads? It will save three sets of bother:

(1) Someone bothering to answer your questions.

(2) You being bothered to read the reply.

(3) You being bothered to try to do something properly, having been shown how.

Yes, you can join them any way you like. Take care, the wires are quite thin.

Thanks - sorry for bothering you and anyone else I may have upset

Go in peace :beerjug:

Do though buy a soldering iron, if you don't buy a pre-made lead. The wires are very thin, so joining them well any other way will be tricky and insulation tape is the invention of the devil.

The only bad question is the one not asked - cheezy but true.

As mentioned in later messages, i'd strongly recommend soldering the connection, then taping - i used self amalgamating tape - great stuff....

Red/green = +
Brown = -

I have connected to the existing wires running to the connector by the key switch (this is how Oxford BMW connected the intercom), so i still have the spare connector on the battery free. You may want to buy a connector and use the terminal on the battery. You pay's yer money, you take your choice.
3. Should I get the dealer to do!
This depends on your confidence/competance.

I'll post some piccies tomorrow.

You can't see much, and i don't want to remove the tape, as it's sealed!
- i'd recommend self amalgamating tape for anything where it may get damp/wet (anything on a motorcycle!)

GPS and intercom power.JPG
As mentioned in a previously, NOG exposed about a 10mm length of copper cable - NOT CUT - to which intercom power cables were soldered to. I extended this by also soldering on the GPS. I used the tape which bonds together to create a waterproof seal.

Here is the back of the mount, showing the cable routing
