Just fitted a new clutch slave cyl and stainless hose to the bike, all seems good, just one thing that's puzzling me: when fitting, you have to push it in against a spring force a smidgen to catch the first bolt. Please tell me that's normal!

Doesn't that mean that the release bearing is always loaded up? I know it's only the force of the spring in the slave cyl but it means it will be spinning all the time, no? That's a lot of rpms in a day...

Don't know about the bikes with hydraulic clutch, but
on cables it is always loaded and I don't remember
hearing of one being broken.......

but perhaps more experienced people think otherwise.....
wait for some more.

The fluids will take care of the extra pressure. Bleed it properly and it will be fine.

I've removed the slave cylinder a couple of times. Some force is required to re-mount it – I believe this is normal. Out of interest where did you get your stainless clutch line from – is it an adv one or aftermarket?

, it's just that if you have any load on the clutch release bearing on the old Guzzis they don't last long,

They don't last long on BMW's if they're under any load, thats why you shouldn't hold the clutch in while waiting at traffic lights etc.

With the clutch out the thrust piston will be spinning at engine speed, but it won't be under any load.

Thanks Steptoe, peepoor design really, at least the Guzzi one is like the K series BMs where the release bearing runs in the gearbox oil. The one in the slave cyl only has it's initial lube, although as you say it's only under the force of the piston spring when not disengaging the clutch. That's still a hell of a lot of revolutions in its (not so long) lifetime.

Noticed you had also put it on those 'things to take on a trip' posts, I was just heading back north on the A1 from a 3000 mile trip round France when it went. I'll pay more attention to those posts next time!

Good point about not idling with the clutch pulled in at lights etc, need to stop doing those GP style drags away from the lights now...
