Yes you can do it yourself.

tank needs removing / lifting to get at the wiring. (there is a socket placed under here that receives the wires from the handlebar switch).

Other wiring is easy to do.

No programming needed.

if you cant find the empty position for the relay just ask,its not obvious:D

thanks, is the tank easily removed?

Yes easy to remove but can be a right pain to get back into the correct position.

Make sure the front location bolts are correctly positioned otherwise you could cross thread one of them.

Can anybody out there advise on the relay position, connections and if the bike needs programming. Local dealer says I will need to pop in and program it?

Make sure your fuel tank is not full of fuel. Its a big heavy mother to lift off if it is.

Cheers, do you mean it will be obvious when I lift the tank off are you just keen on health and safety?

Judging by what the Standard 1200 Tank felt like when I took mine off 3/4 full - it will be very cumbersome (due to the shape), you almost certainly won't have it's centre of gravity in a good place for holding it and it will be very heavy.

Oh and if it does start to slip, the liquid will move inside, thus moving the CogG around making it harder to hold.

It's heavy when full, awkward and you have to lift it quite high to get it off the bike. I have done it once when it was full - never again and I'm not exactly a weakling :D

Made that mistake when I serviced my bike a couple of months ago. I had to drain the tank to get it back on. Not only was it heavy but the bolt holes didn't line up either. My theory is the tank distorts slightly with all the weight.
