Fitting GPS power - Removing tank...

Do I need to remove the GS12 fuel tank to route the power cable for a 2720??

If so, how is it done?

If not, where do I route the cable?

Also, does anyone have advice on whether to permanently connect to the battery versus connecting to some other power source? (But what power source? I have a aux pwr socket plug courtesy of Pondboy - thank you - but is there somewhere else??)

just run it up behind the panels and connect to the aux supply its switched

You can route along the rh side following the fuel pipes, or remove the tank and follow the main loom

Personally I don't like gadgets wired straight across the battery, even if there is nothing plugged into the socket, the fact that it is live all the time encourages corrosion of the socket JMO though

My Quest is powered by a TT cradle, which is plugged into a second accesory socket on the dash cover, which is wired direct to the battery. I didn't take the tank off, a few minutes wriggling with my small girly hands and I managed to thread the wires down between the inside of the tank and the frame. I also managed to follow the same method with the wiring for a pair of flooters, last night in fact. Just remember that that large inviting looking space below the tank, is where the telelever moves up and down.

What connection cables did you get with it ?

There are special cables for the "retrofit kit" http://ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog/r1200gs(04-up)/images/r1200gs(04-up)124.gif

Somewhere under the front of the tank there is a socket for connecting this kit into - you ought to be able to piggyback onto that.

If you are going to remove the tank (complete with most of the panels) go for a nice long ride to use up the petrol or grow another pair of hands

Don't think my banana mits are going to get very far in those spaces!

Clive, I have the Garmin m/c lead, the one that provides a split for the head-phone connection, bare wire ends and an in-line fuse.

I'd love to find the somewhere under the front of the tank, but I'm damned if I know where to start to look or what it looks like!

Two votes so far go for "run it behind the panels". Thanks guys. As a temporary (and we all know how long that means) fix it sounds like a good option for tonight...

Direct vs Indirect - Until I know where it will be best placed, I'll try indirect, which means rigging it to the aux socket. It'll look slightly odd, but so what?
