Hi Im new here, Ive done 104,000 miles so far, though not without problems, Im on shaft No 6, two faulty oil coolers, ignition coil, three starter motors, the odd seal etc..., but I still like the ole girl. As I do not use the brakes that much, I do travel swiftly... I am thinking about replacing the front disc for the first time and I have seen a GS with a K1100 caliper on it. Has anyone done this? is it better? what disc should be used? does the master cylinder need replacing?

regards

Hi Foxy & welcome to the madhouse.

It's a while since I did this to my old R80GS (sold in 2001) but ISTR that you need to mill about 5mm off the mating face of the K series caliper in order for it to line up with the GS disc. Using a PFM cast iron disc & AP Racing pads will also make a significant improvement to your brakes.

I have the K1100 calliper on mine - standard disk but uprated forks (WP) and a higher grade of oil (search on Millichap cocktail) and braided steel brake line and don't skimp on the pads either.

Huge improvement over the stock set-up though admittedly we're talking a lot more than just the 4-pot calliper but still nowhere near the braking you would associate with modern biking. You used to be able to buy them ready to fit from Motobins & Motorworks but they stopped selling them modified fearing I believe some backlash should something go wrong with one fitted.

In all honesty the adjustment is very minor and involves machining the calliper a couple of thou'* (as I understand it).

* don't quote me that :D

By spooky co-incidence I'm not bidding on the one on Ebay as I got one locally and fitted it to the larger front disc already on the bike. Can't remember the details on the upgraded disc kit but I'm sure someone will be able to fill in the blanks. :augie :aidan

There is an article on converting the caliper here which gives some idea of what's involved. :thumb

in yet another spooky coincidence, i am fairly familiar with thunder's disc mod. it's from HE engineering in germany. it's intended for use with the original 2-pot caliper.

it won't take a motorworks modded 4-pot caliper without more modding on either the caliper or bracket being done.

To continue the chain of spooky coincendences, when I called in to see the local PD expert (he's had his from new since 1993 and uses it daily) he looked at the front disc upgrade and mentioned he had a caliper modified for that exact conversion gathering dust in his shed. :eek:

Turns out he didn't need it anymore after making some major front end modifications in the area of braking :augie

I've a bucketfull of 4 pot calipers.
The mounting point needs to be machined down to 10.5 mm thick ;)

:confused:
now a shedful, a shelf full or even a storage bin full of calipers i'd understand.

do you keep all your spares in buckets? :hide
