Just fitted the BMW retro fit engine bars to my 09 GS. First impressions are that they are made of chocolate !! and i do not want to have to test them down the road.

And if course i had to strip the left hand side oil line screw that fits into the upper left hand side of the engine, so I'am hoping that this isnt going to be too much a problem. Has anyone had any experience of this happening ? does it mean I will have to tap it out or can i get away with it.

Why did you have to touch this? Surely the engine bars (if they are anything like the 1150 ones) don't require the oil line to be removed?

If it is stripped, then it will almost certainly be the alloy which is damaged rather than the steel bolt - potentially a big problem.

I've no experience of the retro fitted crash bars for the Gs, but I do have a Gsa with BMW bars fitted....

....if they are the same as them, although they don't look very substantial they do work. :augie

Not sure that helps?

....as for the threading, if it isn't the nut then you can get inserts to thread into threaded holes...not sure what they're called though.

I fitted the Motech bars - much sturdier but I am told you have to "loosen" them to access the L + R engine covers??

They use the same bolt you describe (however I would say it is for stability rather than an anchor point, from memory it is an M6 Bolt so not exactly tonka grade....). I noticed this bolt was missing a few months ago and went to replace it, anyway when replacing it I found the threads were stripped, which might explain why it was not tourqued up and in place. Because the captivated part of the nut is part of the "hanger" and separate to the engine I just tapped it out again and used thread seal when replacing the bolt. It torqued up fine and has remained tight ever since.

The bars were then unfortunately "tested" at a 40 mph slide down slippy tarmac and they work fine (albeit a little scratched) but everything is in place and they did their job absolutley perfect.

Rik

Cheers Guys

Thanks for your replies fellas, I feel a little more comfortable although it was one of those moments when you think " I can just get a little more bite on that" & then "Oh F**k".............anyway done now....

Will tap it out or even use one of those very useful plug in thingies !!

Cheers Les
