fitting rear shock

Please take a look at the following fiche

If you look where the shock fits onto the rear wheel fork. My question is whether there is a lip on the inside of the bit the shock fits between.

I'm trying to put a new shock on but suspect it may have the wrong size of spacer.

To put this another way, if your looking at this part of the bike from the rear, with the rear wheel off, shock off, and you look at the inside left of the area the shock fits onto. Is there a lip there or is it supposed to be flush?

I cant upload a helpful picture for you but if anyone knows for sure, it would be great to know because my new shock dosn't fit and I want to be sure of my facts before I release the hounds of hell tomorrow.

I think you'll find that the lip is machined out to provide a pair of parallel faces for the shock to sit between

The steel tube that the bolt passes thru is clamped by the bolt against the alloy movement is then made within the lower bush rubber

If the bush were able to move it would eat the alloy and eventually start wearing away the lower shock bolt

They are a tight fit but they go in unless you have a non BM shock?

I'd had an 1150rt shock in for two months while waiting for this one.

Forced tbe original shock in using rubber mallet and then removed it and tried the new one. It was very tight but it fits! Had to put original in first though.

Tanks for info on alloy fit bush. Exactly the info I could notfind. It must have moved back in a bit when I forced inthe oem shock.

Well, I'm back in this thread.

Mentioned in a recent post about me needing to change handlebars and also replace the paralever bearings. So, since my cam chain tensioner didn't arrive in time for the weekend postal delivery, I thought I'd at least check the paralever bearings.

Long story short, there is no play in the paralever bearings:D

Unfortunately, there is play at shock absorber mount. It seems like the either the bush is worn or it's missing. There is definate movement in the shock around the bolt. numbers 2 + 9 below.

I actually don't know if the bush is installed. It has been like this for about a year. Hurl abuse at me if necessary but would you mind looking at the photo I'll send in a minute and let me know if there is a bush missing? I'll be planning on getting a new bolt in there asap too.

I think the answer lies here but I'm none the wiser. I'll put a pix up now in a moment. thanks.
 
It looks like you have bush to me. Your part No2 looks like mine.

Is the movement you detect lateral or axial, i.e. side to side or up and down and does the fastening bolt move within the shocks' lower eye?

BTW, my RSV's Ohlins didn't fit snugly in the swingarm but that was a factory fit.

The shock fits very snugly in the swingarm. Very snugly infact.

I noticed the play is around the bolt. With the shock removed from the swingarm, I put the bolt back in and there is a lot of play at the bush end. Same with the shock on but with it on the movement in is lateral. I.e the shock is moving up and down on the bolt

The shock that's in it is a hyperpro

Crikey. The fastener moves in the shocks lower eye. By quite an amount. The Ohlins (the one from earlier in this thread) has less movement. I don't have the OEM shock anymore.
 
I've been tracing a weird vague feeling at the back for a while now.

Advice here folks please.

The bolt shouldn't move in the eye of shock absorber should it? Do I need a thicker bolt? Or should I send the shock back?

I'm wondering if the bush is on the way out because of the play in the shocks lower eye??

This handling thing has cost a lot so far and I wondering what the effect would be on the handling?
 
The bolt shouldn't be moving within either eye of the shock except of course, for fitting.
The lower bolt is M8, IIRC, and therefore the diameter of the eye should be slightly larger. I'll go for 8.1mm at a guess.

I've got a spare OE shock in the garage and will go and have look. Back soon...

Right, the mounting bolts are M10 and the eye diameters on the shock are both 10.08mm or thereabouts.

I can't check what eye diameter I have on the hyperpro until tomorrow.

I'll get a new bolt and bush on order first thing Monday. In the mean time I'll check how it feels with a known good m10. It's going back if there is play.

With an m10 in the oem shock, can you feel any play? I'd expect not!

I have rechecked the eye sizes and am going for 10.1mm and dropped the shank of a 10mm drill bit through and of course can detect, and see, a bit of movement.

What I have found with my example does not concern me. The bushes within an OE shock are replaceable and have rubber dampers preinstalled.

I hope this helps...
 
It does help. I'll get a new bush and bolt and install. I'll go from there. Thanks
 
Refitted rear shock and torqued everything Down. It's much happier back there... New bush and bolt on order.
 
So did you check the eye diameters on your shock?

Don't forget to provide a report on the installation of that bush into the swinging arm please. :thumb
