Want to fit spots to my Megamoto - anyone know where the best place to attach to a switched supply might be - anyone done this?

Also - tried to take of the front headlight side fairings, took out the two torx screws top and bottom but still feels held on by something - any ideas before I graunch it?

Thinking of doing the same.

However, was contemplating a direct run from the battery rather than the pilot light (which was recommended from the ADVrider site).

Any reason why not direct contact with the batt?

Using the supply from the pilot light to switch the relay for the spots (so I can turn spots on and off), would still connect direct to the battery as well for the power for the spots.

Thanks, any pics of your set up? I am contemplating converting a Micro De to HID. How figuring how to do the switch; I am planning to use it as a back-up light / supplemental, but not running light.

Cheers

I'm looking at attaching the spots to a set of Holan crashbars with a set of P clips - would prefer to attach somewhere off the brackets that hold the petrol tank side panels but haven't worked out how to do that. Wunderlich did a kit that did this but it's no longer available.

Plan on using a Yamaha yz400? handlebar switch I got off ebay that look like the BMW ones to turn the spots on and off.

Connect the switch to the pilot light circuit and then onto a relay hanging off the wiring harness under the left hand tank panel, connected to the battery.

Haven't done it yet, might get it done this weekend. I'll try and take some pics

So here goes trying to explain how I''ve fitted spots to my Megamoto.

Really for safety, since I was hit by a car some years ago.

Spots are Hella Micro DE's.

Switch to switch on and off is a Yamaha YZ400 from ebay.

Attaching spots to Holan crashbars, would prefer to fit to the bracket that holds the tank panels on, but haven't got the facilities to cut and bend metal.

First take of the headlamp trim and carbon fibre surround.

Two torx bolts holding the trim and three holding the carbon surround.

You need to pull the trim a bit forward to take off (I was worried it'd break)

You can see the carbon headlamp surround and the trim that I've photographed on the bike seat

So then you need to attach the switch, here it is and attached to the bars.

Then you need a switched circuit so you can turn the spots on and off when the ignition is on. I used the pilot light live side which is a blue/white wire, the other one is brown and an earth.

What I did was stripped back a bit of the tape cover and then attached a small T-Tap (Red - the smallest size), I then re-wrapped the wires with some self amalgamating tape. I kow purists will say I should have stripped the wire and soldered a wire on but I'm going to see how this goes.

The T-Tap was attached to the red/yellow wire from the switch, the other wire (black) is going off to the relay

Over to the spots.

They have two wires each coming out, one live (attached to the bulb) and one earth.

I gave myself plenty of wire (actually too much) and then covered it in heat shrink.

I ran the wires across the top of the crash bars and then up and under the (removed) side panel.

I then ran a fused lead from the positive and negative side of the battery (fused on the postive wire obviously.

This I connected up to a relay.

Relays are normally 4 way with a numbering system written on the relay.

Connect the fused positive from the battery to number 30 on the relay.

Connect the run from the handlebar switch to number 86.

Connect the negative earth wire from the battery basically to number 85. You will have three earths to make. I used a bullet multiway connector (there are other connectors like this or you can run individual wires, it just gets morw messy) and attached 1 wire from the earth on the battery, one earth wire from each spot and one connection to number 85 on the relay. So a common earth for the spots and the relay.

You then attach the spots postive wires to another multiway bullet connector (or other similar connector) and connect that connector with another wire to number 87 on the relay.

That's basically the wiring then you just have to tidy the wires away with cable ties - I used far to long lengths of wiring so I looped it and attached it to the frame with cable ties. The picture shows it in one position I tried, but that was visible so I moved the bundle of wires up and to the left and attached to a vertical frame spar. If you cut the wires shorter then you wouldn't have this sort of problem

Finally I cable tied all the wires out of the way, made sure the wire from the switch to the relay wasn't going to be hindered by the steering and cable tied the realy through its mounting hole to the main wiring harness.

Some pictures of the bike with the spots fitted.

I realise this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you can come up with a better mounting place tell me.

Thanks for the pics and write-up, Jon.

I have yet to install mine, but I am wary of installing the Micro DEs near to the header and the cylinder-head. I am looking at installing them higher up, possibly at the bottom of the side-covers.

Please let me know if heat is an issue on your set-up.

Will post pics once I get working on this.

Cheers

Routed the wires away from the exhaust along the top of the crashbars and tried to keep the cable ties as far away as possible.

Ran the bike on tickover for about 15 mins and ran for about 40 miles without a problem.

We'll see, would prefer to mount them higher up though but don't know how to make some mounts to the side panel brackets.
