France other than Alps, Pyrenees and er France....

Five days is good, ignore the Belgium coast line as it is full time buidilngs head into the Zeelande area of Holland there are same lovely old villages. If I were you after a day or two there I would head down to the Belgian Ardennes as it is close to you and five days on the coast in that part of the world could well be OTT.

I believe that Holland, and Belgium are often overlooked in the dash across to the Alps etc. There are some spectacular bridges/barriers as you skirt around the north west coast of Holland. However, I think the better area is inland. The road system in terms of major routes is pretty dense which means you can move around the country (Holland) quite easily. The riding pleasure, in my opinion in Holland is a little different from what we are used to here. Between the major routes there are lots of minor roads which connect villages and ribon developments along canals. Get up onto some of the higher dyke top roads and you get wonderfull views and it's nice to just "potter" along, not my typical mode. Lovely people. Chilled, relaxing place.
Belgium is a little more erratic, specially in terms of road surfaces. You can go from smooth to rutted and potholed in no time and for no clear reason. Get further east and as far as Luxembourg and there are some spectacular roads.
Have fun.

I also think that 5 days is more than enough time. Some of the coastal roads in the north are spectacular and there are some beautiful villages and rural areas, but they take some seeling out.

The roads are generally crowded, dull and straight, but the Dutch people are open and friendly and Dutch bikers will be pleased to meet you.

Everybody seems to speak English, but a friendly 'Let op drempels!' on first meeting will always be appreciated.

.......... Everybody seems to speak English, but a friendly 'Let op drempels!' on first meeting will always be appreciated.

And if like me you were wondering ..........
google reckons that 'Let op drempels' means watch out for speed bumps.

I'm going to be a complete party pooper ... :aidan

I don't have a lot of experience of Holland, but have been two or three times (other than the obvious mad dash to Assen) and wasn't that inspired i'm afraid.

Most coast routes in my experience are also pretty shite. Hamlet after hamlet after village after town .... think, oh I don't know, ... Seaford goes Newhaven, goes Peacehaven, goes Saltdean, goes Brighton ..... (yawn..)

My experience has always taught me to avoid coast roads unless they're the well trodden Calais - Wissant - Boulogne-sur-mer sort of stuff ..

I'd be heading somewhere just south of Liege for some cracking roads, and great (three dimensionial) scenery .... :thumb2

I can only echo what Giles said..... Dull, dull, dull = Holland and coastal roads are never great.

Just like roads around large lakes and along many rivers.... everything and everyone gets squashed between the land and a wet place.

Sigh ....

Oh Trixie,

We have so much in common ... if only you weren't a bit older than me ...

:jaq

:green gri

But it always raises a smile, and who doesn't like to see dutch girls smile:D

we did 5 days approx last year, from the north to the south, I would now say that 5 hours is more than enough :blast:blast

Thanks everyone for your replays
I think we will give holland a miss then
On all your advice.
Any suggestions where we should go
Bearing in mind we have 5 days and
Have to be back home on fith day?
Thanks again
Bob

This is probably a daft question, but why Oostende? You are landing yourself on the doorstep of the most hideous and over-populated motorway network in Europe and will like as not spend a day trying to circumnavigate roadworks in Antwerp or similar.

If you are basing your daily mileages on your experience of UK roads, you may be being overly cautious on your estimated daily mileages. French roads, particularly the autoroute system (not all toll/peage BTW), are generally uncongested and may allow you to travel far further in a day than you currently think possible. :thumb

I will start sounding like a scratched record .....

If you have about five days, then one day there, one day back gives you three.

If you're all seasoned 'ard bastards (should be living in Essex :D) and you're prepared to put in a bloody long first and last day, then 600 miles from Calais will put you in the Tarn Gorge. (France's grand canyon). A great playground where you can either stay in one hotel and day trip for three days, or move each night. (my preference..). But that's ten hours on the auto route there (not including coffee stops).

If it was me ...

I'd go Meuse valley. Think Spa Francorchamps. A great place. Fantastic roads. Take a day trip to Nurburgring -check their official web site for either all day or evening public track times where you can either just soak up the atmosphere or potter round as a touriste keeping out the way of the bigger boys! and the B258 there is yet another blinding road...

Spa ... Malmedy ... Three days play with one to the Ring ..?

Perfect trip ... :thumb2

Why Oostende ?
Don't know really we just wanna go somewhere with nice roads, cafes☕scenery,
Maybe little bit of trails but not a lot of motorway and nice people.
And no don't wanna stay in uk. ferry seems more of an adventure if you know
What I mean.
Thanks bob

Cheers Giles
600 miles I'm not that ard' mate my body could probably
Take it but my r s e would be like the back of a baboon🐒 after
That mileage I think lol
Bob

Then go to Spa / Malmedy

You'll not be disapointed ... :thumb2

Its an easy gentle days ride to get to the Mosel, or Ardennes areas.

Try putting a map on the dart board, and throw something at it :hide
