Fix for headlight holder clip

Got this message last week in Southampton while visiting my son on the GS.

Replaced dipped lamps twice before with no issue - not so this time.....

PING went the spring clip, and after 15mins finding the little bstd, quickly found out why it had pinged - one of the aforementioned crappy little plastic 'pegs' had snapped.

Cut a long story short - managed to get the clip to stay in place - needed two hands in though - had to partially disassemble the fairing and such to get my hands in properly using the tool kit off the bike (luckily I had swapped the gs one for my old K1200 one when I changed, much better kit).

Thought of cramming the back of the cup with foam or paper but wasn't sure if it would take the heat of the bulb - but decided on persevering with the other method - I succeeded and it got me home.

Just spotted this idea and have done the necessary this afternoon - using a number plate cap as suggested... Well done sir - what a fantastic bit of good old British ingenuity

Pleasure sure. Beer accepted! Make sure you carry a few with you especially travelling. I keep a few taped in the light module for a rainy day or helping another Tosser in need.

I have already given this advice to my brother - he's never had the problem (yet) on his GSA - but is putting one in his toolkit tonight!!

I'll also put a couple in mine as they are a godsend - just in case I come across another 'unfortunate' on my travels.

Just had the same problem with clip
Took an hour to get it back hold the bulb only to find the reflective internal is part detached
I am now getting flashed by helicopters
Anyone know the assembley ?? can it be taken apart ??
any help greatfully recieved

Very good tip indeed!
I discovered last week that mine is also fried. Even the two bulb guiding "horns" at 12 o'clock were gone.
I managed to put the spring in place due to my girly hands, but I will go a-hunting for that carpenter thingamajig asap.

It's quick enough to take the headlamp off the bike then you can see exactly what's going on. Just don't forget to properly seat the bottom grommet.

My hid packed up on the way to cadwell park on Friday, decided to remove it and swap the H7 high beam over to the low beam, both of the friggin clips broke, I will be doing this mod this weekend, at least I didn't drop them as I did it with the bike on 10" long grass, I'd never have found them.

What a fantastic fix. Mine went west changing the fifth bulb in 4 1/2 years (why do these bikes eat headlamp bulbs?). I saw this fix and then luckily found a couple of ally cups in an odds and ends container. I filed a notch and fitted the lot back in. NLC you should be paid by BMW to sort out their crap design. Thanks for the idea.

Just found this post and made the fix after a couple of years wrestling with the wire and screw. Good info - thanks

Mine has had a large washer doing this job for some time. It just needs to trap the spring clip into its slot in the reflector casing. If the washer is a bit large just file a couple of slots so the spring clip can lift as it should.
