fixing vary top box

My 3 year old top box - in use daily - is buggered. I can no longer collapse it. it seems the "gearing" on the right hand front (looking from the latch) mechanism is slipping.

Before I attempt to take the box apart to discover I am incapable of fixing it, discovering the mechanism will explode in my face, I end up losing tiny bits and me losing my temper and flinging the bloody thing across the garage any advice would be appreciated.

Is this a common problem (not me losing my patience)?
Is it easy to fix?
Any tips ?

cheers doesn't mention flinging the thing across the garage but I'll give it go

if it is slipping you have already damaged the cogs.
been there done that.
to fix i took the cogs out of my side boxs as i never adjust them and a nice bit of teck seven sealed them in the extended position.
gained a nice bit of room as well.
