FJR1300 - New pony in the stable

I saw him in the shooting thread, he's grown a bit alright. What age is he now John ?
turned 12, taken to fishing and camping so mad go off on bike for a weekend camping. will do ti in few weeks maybe head to cork

he wanted me buy a hp2 he saw in meskells and i was like not a hope.

He fancies a trils bike so i will try find a cheap 125 for him

Got to say while it came from a dealer I do think he has pulled a little fast one. I was in work when he dropped it off so couldn't meet him, he was 4 hours away so felt least buying from a dealer might reduce risk of a lemon.

When I rang him I asked what is needed for bike, I was told it has been fully serviced and good to go needs nothing. Also asked was there any damage to rear fairing on the bike as its common area to crack with an over loaded top box, he said none that could see just few age related scratches.

I found when I got home:

- rear tyre is shot,
- rear disc is warped,
- a leak in the radiator
- x2 cracks in the rear fairing.

All are repairable with money, well a cheap bike now is turning into a mini project and cash gobbler. reminds why I don't trust car or bike dealers. Rang him again and said why was none of this mentioned and he said sure tyres wear more on the right as we are in Ireland and cracks were in the advert, rubbish not one mention or photo of a crack. Plus warped/heavily gouged disc was so bad could see it once looked at it from rear.

He is to call me back once he checks his service sheets, if he covers cost of a new rear tyre and a disc rest i can repair in hose or replace with good used parts (seem to be plenty them on ebay france)

So off down the rabbit hole I go. It will be like new once finished (wife is looking at me again, another bike stripped to bits)

pic below was half way through my disassembly

How’s the bike going John? I had a gen 1 for a month and just too fast for me. I recon I’m am more Honda 90 😁

@john_aero

I seem to recall some very corroded connectors in a block of connections behind the headstock

and the alarm immobiliser issue, that nearly stopped my friends trip had bad connections on the side of an electrical box somewhere at the second arrow

Its been a minute or two since I worked on that bike SO its a bit hazy now

Also his may have been a 1st gen so I may be giving you a bum steer But it doesn;t take long to look

sorry was away on hols,

yes there are 6 ground blocks that can corrode and cause issues. The upgrade isn't being sold anymore so i have ordered up the connectors and will make my own

Mine doesn't have the imob however i will check the rear connector you shown as i think thats for the auto clutch

Sorry back from few days away,

currently getting ready to do the valves, then will start cleaning any electrical connectors.

Also thinking what to do with dent in the rad. Local rad builder said if its not leaking then leave it, if worried then pressure test it over night and if ok then don't worry about it.

I remember now why I hate and never trust dealer or sales men

Ready run my hole, rad bent, dented and pipes oval, few pipes rotted out

Going be a bloody dear tidy up

Rear tyre shot and disc fucked.

they are a great bike but not without their problems, as said above all the spiders on the loom corode, rear suspension needs regular care, cam chain tensioner if not replaced with modified one with green spot can fail, front fork seals can be a pain,

Had a hen one for a week. More pony than ybis hooray can ride
Pub talk after lots of Guinness,
“I had a loan of one for a week, more ponies than this boyo can ride.”
Has anyone fathomed out what this actually means yet? I’ve read it a few times now and am no nearer to understanding what language it is written in.
