Right then, this is going to cause a tirade, I know, but I was in Piddly cocks the other day an dthye had a 1200 Adv in there. I hadn't seen one before in the flesh and there are some nice details on it compared to mine (1150 Adv) from 03.

Now, the thing is......do I change to the newer, lighter, faster, more nimble (?) model with those niceties -or do I just stick with the one I know and spend some money on a few tiddly bits (like HID riding lights on brackets, and main beam and a gel seat) I already have the dip beam done.

What is the consensus over here on the new 1200? Is it still unreliable and giving trouble? Or have they sorted all th eniggles out. I don't want to swap from a reliable, heavier, slower (but faster than me) and as nimble as I need bike for something that is just going to be a pain in the RRRRs.

I find the 1150 does everything I NEED, is pretty well put together and strong (just written off a car and only bent my crash bars and put a couple of dents in the pannier!)

Thanks for any help and advice I might get.

Happy Christmas and a very Merry New year to you all.

Its onto its Mk2 version now and still not right - recall due to brake failure.

how many recalls is that?

If you really do want one... then give it another year or so - see how this new model pans out.

In my view the risks of getting a bad one are just to high to be worth it. And while the residual value of the 12 goes into free fall - the precise opposite is true of the 1150.

just to add... the problems with the 12 have not centred on the engine - but all the nonsensical and IMHO pointless ancillaries. (plus on earlier models final drive and gear box)

ask yourself this "what would St. eptoe do?"

Treachery

As it's christmas the time of good will but we have to draw the line somewhere! go and wash out your mouth with soap and water!. You've answerd your own question, "my 1150 does everything I want it to do".
So there you are say no more and save a pile of cash!.
dave GS ( happy now) it's almost over!!

Keep the 1150 or make very sure you definitely want the 12GSA

Been there on a 2008 12GSA - so glad that I'd bothered to keep my 1150Adv in the shed

Some people love the 12GSA and others don't

I may like a HP2 though

I have had an 1150, 2 x 1200's and now have an 1100.
Only my 2nd 1200 (06) gave me any problems but it had the lot so I sold it when the warranty ran out as I had no faith in it and bought a kawasaki.

4 months later I bought the 1100 as I just missed the bloody things:rolleyes:

In my honest oppinion non of them are better than any of the others, just different, so get a test ride and make your own mind up, good luck.

Thank you for the replies folks.

I spent the entire New Years Eve drinking soapy washing up water as penance for even daring to think of changing.....

It's OK, sanity has been regained and the old 1150 will remain as a trusted friend.:ChrisKelly

Happy New Year to you all.

My R80/7 had a 'sweet spot' at 4000rpm that was soo smooth and let me ride vibration free for hundreds of km/day. My R100S prefers 5000rpm and my '05 GS was the same.
My new GS is still too young (1350kms) and I have yet to try to find that bike's sweet spot.:)

thats exactly what the majority of 11xx,s are, trusted friends:thumbhad over 100 bikes and ridden most things, but sell my 1150? noooooooooo

Hi, I have been trolling around the dealers looking for a gs 1200 on 08, plenty of low milers around ( bmw employees lease bikes ).
Had test rides on ESA and standard, also an 800, I was only offered one good deal on my Duke as part ex ( Jason at tonbridge motorrad ) every one else was offering silly money take it or leave it deals, a bit of dithering and the tonbridge bike had sold.
Turned out to be a blessing as I decided to buy a cheap 1150, and flog the duke in the summer then part ex/sell the 1150.
Now I'm with Digger and Doughboy :D I love the 1150:bow more character than the 1200, I'm a 1150 boy and staying that way:beerjug:

One advantage with sticking to the 1150 is not having to have that chip removed that sits so well on 1150 owners shoulders:augie

On rideouts i've been on the bike that need attention or having to be stretchered home have been 1100's or 1150's:nenau
Mind you i've only been on 15 or 20 rideouts over my GS years so there is room for a 1200 failure yet I suppose.

Character???? For me, my mostly bog stock 35,000 mile 12gsa has loads, its always done what I have asked and its never let me down, I look around at a fair few GS's and although I see the attraction in some airheads:drool (in a vintage bike/novelty sort of way, not as everyday transport), older oil heads are just that, past there best.

Flak jacket required.......1150 to 1200 defection?

It's not a defection it's an upgrade!

I said to the wife the other day I'm thinking about changing from my 1150 to a 1200.......... when mine has completely worn out and you can't get bits any longer :augie:thumb

Truth be told, they are both great bikes - The 12 has just "evolved" .... for those that don't like evolution, this is inevitably a retrograde step. However most of the ....ahem "Issues" are now resolved with the 12 and it is a great bike to live with. I do around 30K miles a year and like most here who use the 12GSA - I love it. I have ridden the 1150 and it is a fine machine - not sure I would buy one out of choice if it was lined up with a 12GSA though :hide

Ye wouldn't catch me going back down the GS1150 / 1200 route, there total overpriced crap:thumb2

Good grief - are you lot still going on about whether 1150's are better than 1200's :blagblah :blagblah

Just get out there and ride which ever one you've got :thumb
