Bike is an 1150 with a 'Y' piece and Remus straight through racing end can, the cat-code plug has been removed. The fuel consumption has increased by about 10 miles per tankfull - so definately running a bit richer (which I'm happy with).

It runs perfectly and I'm very pleased with it - however (theres always an 'however'!!!!) after the engine is hot, ie 20+miles, when blipped in neutral to 3 or 4000 rpm there is a small backfire and a blue flame shoots out of the exhaust.

Looks cool but should I be worried???

Gavin If your fuel consumption has increased then you will be running weaker and the engine will run hotter. As for the flame I`m sure the techno types will wade in with lots of (usually contradictory) reasons for that.

Fuel consumption increased =
more fuel consumed for same distance travelled =

running richer. ( or far too many throttle 'blipping' )

i'd guess you've got a small air leak in the system somewhere, which ignites a fuel rich exhaust gas in hot conditions.

Try sealing it with - horror - silicone sealer - to see if it improves.
If not - put the plug back where it came from.

Shouldn't need to run richer.

i run a y-piece with the standard can, and can provoke a backfire now and again too. i also get a short blast of blue flame - but it only happens every now and again, so it doesn't bother me - actually i quite like it ;-)

When I had the standard can with the Y piece I used get loud backfires, real gun shot jobs :grndevil . Now with the remus on just get the occasional pop and burble ......... which is OK by me. Flames? Dunno, I'm always looking the other way

I run a Y with a standard can it backfires more than it did when I ran a Y and race can.

It also seems my standard can is getting louder... maybe I'm blowing the guts out of it.

As for flames I wish it did...

The mechanic explained this in another post apparantly the free flow in the Y pioece allows a slug of air to get back up the pipes and causes this backfire, it does'nt do it with an open can on 'cos the air does'nt get enough pressure built up, I would put the cat code plug back though, the motronic is on a default runs all fuel map without it in.

Until your panniers or l/h rear indicator melts!

A small price to pay:D

The mechanic, his advise and explanations are superb. He's a real value adding contributor to this forum... BUT can you trust the advice of a man that drives and X-trail:D this point trouble me's

Backfire

r1150gs + Y piece + remus road legal=

buuuuurrrrbbbbbllll bbbuuuuurrrrbbbbllllll BANG!!

and a 12 inch blue flame (so the missus said)

and i love it! Scares the hell out of people behind me at night. My dealer said it is nothing to worry about.......so im not:moped:

X Trail?

Oh dear, someone having a pop at a jap 4x4. I spose we should all drive Landrovers and have platinum RAC membership and deep pockets.

If you were a mechanic you would want a car that gave you no trouble to minimise the amount of work you take home with you.

I've put 36,000 on my 4.2 diesel Patrol this year, and all I've had to do to it is put fuel in at approx 29mpg.

What a strange thing to have a rant over, I think I'll go and lie down in a darkened room and dream of aux. lights and motorswiches so I can see where my 1100 points at night
