Good morning all.
Can anyone give any insight as to what this knock may be and if it's worth worrying about?
Bike runs fine, valves are fine -making just the right Gs tappettty noises but there is an underlying knock that is a little more disturbing than the others.
Engine is on 56k and running fresh 20w50 oil.
No smoke, starts fine, idles fine. It just knocks a lot!

Hope someone can enlighten me!

Just a first thought. Have you replaced the LH cam chain tensioner? At idle they can sound crap if this hasn't been done. I changed mine and was really surprised how quiet the motor became. It's a 50 quid mod and takes about 20 min.

It's a tensioner upgrade rather than a mod

The new CCT was on the list of potentials. Is there any way of ruling this out? Or modifying the original?

Put the palm of your hand on the outer end of the crash bar and push gently towards the engine....you can even slap the bar when the engine is off and hear it.

They have a habit of snapping at the top mounting point bracket and at idle, the resonance of the bar hitting the casing can sound like that.

I cant get the vid to play at the minute(rural frickin broadband) Worn throttle body perhaps

Hold the quadrant (bit the throttle cable attaches to on the inside of the throttle body) against the throttle stop

It will flutter under your fingers but if you can hold it steady against the idle stop you may find the noise goes away

Changing for a lower mileage one or a repair kit does help make the bike run a bit smoother

Hi chaps,
Is definitely not the bars, as I've had these off recently when sorting the flakey paint out. (Not been cleaned since)

Throttle bodies are a bit noisy, but nothing more than usual, and they quieter down when you put your hand on them. So that rules them out.

Hmmmmm

If your not sure about which cam chain tensioner you have fitted to the LH side.

The original cam chain tensioner has a 17mm hex head. The modified tensioner has a 15mm hex head

Hi Chris,

Has it always been there? if not when/how did it start?

Also is it more pronounced when hot?

My 1100 used to make some real strange knocking noises when hot, I remember thinking when in Italy once that it soured like it was going to fall apart at any moment! all was well when cold.

Sounds to me like its more obvious on the left side? might be worth taking the rocker covers off and seeing if its dry??

Chaps,
Thanks for the replies.
Its not a new noise - I've just booked a trip away in September and want to get it all shipshape before then.

Noise wise, it does get louder the hotter it is.
I've just changed the oil, and it seems a bit better.
It sounded a bit like the bottom end to me (if there is one with it being flat'n'all), I've had an Alfa so I know exactly what that sounds like. Unfortunately my wife doesn't.

I'm going to try and get a bit of a run out on it this weekend, and may even pop in to Motorworks and get a new tensioner. Its definitely the original one that is still in place.

Thanks Again, and I'll report back.

Chris
