During a very close lightning strike yesterday afternoon my broadband modem glowed in the dark for a split second and now smells like the dodgems at the fair so I'm guessing it's knackered, where's the best place to get a replacement?

It's a Thomson Speedtouch 330.

Try if first, it might not be cream-crackered, modems often have a surge suppressor widget which absorbs much of the incoming energy, but dies in doing so. On the other hand, it may have also killed whatever it was connected to, no telling with how lightning behaves.

You can probably replace it with any standard USB modem from PC World, but you will need to know the setting for your ISP.

Even if it isn't ferked (though I'm sure it propably is) - replace it with an ADSL Modem Router*, I'll even give you a make and model to make it nice and simple.
Netgear DG834G from your local PC Woe store about £50 and while you're at it get a surge protection socket with phone/in & outputs and hopefully you'll be in a slightly better position next time it happens.

Of course if you don't need or desire Wireless then it could be even cheaper :thumb:

* Fannykins and I both told you about running with a modem didn't we due to the other problems you were having :nono :nono :nono

Also check out Amazon, last time I looked they were giving away a free USB wireless dongle with these.
