Flat Battery...just a thought!

those of you who can't fathom out the problem need to return it to the dealer.

Well, may not be the battery after all? .....

Accidentally activating the parking light has been blamed, but I have found this a little hard to comprehend since I am sure that most of us would have noticed the light on when leaving our bikes at the end of the day

Well I have heard that the latest software corrects an issue whereby if you switch off- and then quickly back on again, this creates some sort of electrical confusion whereby the bike does not actually power down when you leave it. This, if true would explain a lot.

So, why would you switch off and suddenly back on again? I'll tell you why I do it- my BWM alarm is configured to activate automatically when ignition off and I frequently need to deactivate it when unloading gear from my boxes- so I switch the ignition on again!

Just a thought, but may explain some flat batteries :D

Grinning GSer is correct, I called in Blue Bell yesterday and they have just received information from BMW as follows:-

Turning the ignition on and then off imediately without allowing the self diagnostics to complete will not allow the auto shut down to activate.

The parking light can come on if the left indicator switch is tapped,
this will be corrected with new software in the near future and then you will have to activate parking light by pressing left indicator.

The auxillary socket must not be used for battery charging with none BMW battery chargers. Allnone BMW chargers must be connected directly to battery.

Hope this info is usefull.

Just to confirm the last, I was at Ocean Plymouth yesterday, a 1200 owner (RT) was discussing his continued flat battery problem and was given the same info.

It's not being dealt with by recall notice but will get a software update at next service.

Being cynical I suppose BMW want to reduce the number of recalls and 1200 owners who don't know about this will have to suffer until next service!

When I collected my R12, the dealer told me that to switch the canbus system 'off' and to preserve the battery when parked for a while, you had to turn the bars and engage the lock.

All I can say, having done so, is that a four week rest in my garage did not cause any difficulties.

Does anyone know if the procedure is correct? I haven't seen it in print anywhere.

Never heard of this. AFAIK, when the igition is off the CAN bus powers down as soon as the red emergency flasher switch turns off. I have heard that if there is draw on the accessory socket that the system remains powered for 15 minutes or such; with no draw power down is quick, as in within 2 minutes.

Cheers

That might explain why I've had two dead batteries. I usually park up outside the garage to get my gear off before putting her into the garage.
I leave her with the steering lock on, so obviously I have to unlock that before I can move her in. And because the key moves very easily, it's happened that I've flipped the key over to ignition-on-position...

I suspected that something in the processor went to an infinite loop for some reason (seems like it too :P)

Must be more careful in the future. :) Thanks for the info! :beerjug:
