Flip top modular helmet - Shark Evoline, Roof Boxer, Caberg?

The shop that promised a Shark Evoline Series 3 let me down and I've not found one anywhere yet. I tried the Series 2 again to refresh my memory and seeing as I was in the area I also revisited the Givi X.01 and Roof Boxer V8, but my thoughts were the same.

Infinity in Clapham had a Caberg Hyper X which is a fullface modular (i.e. the chin bar doesn't swing, it removes). But the chin bar can be pulled out slightly for ease of getting the helmet on, and no problems doing this whilst wearing glasses. Massive visibility through the large visor. The small chin bar and 'always on' front ventilation might be a disadvantage in the winter, but I was very impressed, and this is definitely on my short list.

Infinity didn't have a Schuberth J1 (I've not found one anywhere in London yet), and whilst they had one Nolan N43 Air in stock it was the wrong size. Nevertheless I was able to play with it and it's quite similar to the Caberg Hyper X in concept.

I'm currently using a Roof Boxer V8. I wouldn't recommend it for winter use as I haven't been able to get it to seal up completely, with mine there's always a bit of a draft.

Apart from that it's comfortable, easy to get on and off and is legal and safety tested open and closed.

I'm enjoying it so far. I've had it a year, no problems, but I may get a full face for the winter.

As Hugh said, lifting the chin piece is easy on the move. I sometimes do mine as I'm reaching a town centre to ventilate a bit more and to provide wider visibility.

I'd give it 7.5 out of 10.

Result !!
(As in, I've made a decision)

After checking some of the other threads I realised there was a 10% discount offer to UKGSers from both Helmet City and Just Helmets. Helmet City had most of the helmets I was interested in, so I visited this morning and spend an hour or so checking everything out.

To recap what I want... I need a helmet that's suitable for both cold weather and hot weather in the same trip (e.g. Spain in winter, followed by southern Morocco). I want to be able to flip the chin bar to improve ventilation, but still have a full pull down visor that's effective against wind in my eyes. Also I'd like a pull down sunshield. You'll note my criteria are all comfort based.

At well over £350, the Schuberth J1 was the most expensive alternative and I had high hopes, but for me the concept is flawed. It has a huge visor which is great, but the chin bar is just a thin rod that can be unclipped, so offers no additional weather protection over the Jet version. Also, the visor can't be lifted high enough, so interferes with my vision. Duh.

When I compared the Shark Evoline to other helmets I realised the visor is quite short, roughly the same as the BMW System 5. BMW got around this by having a different visor for the Jet version (which was a right pain to pack). So on the Shark, when the chin bar is pulled over the top of the head, there's not as much wind protection for the eyes as on alternative helmets. Some people might value the ability to swing the chin bar back into place whilst on the move, but I couldn't envisage changing formats more than three of four times in a trip. At around the £300 mark the Shark is getting on for twice the price of some of the other offerings.

I wasn't expecting to be able to try the HJC IS-Multi, but Helmet City had one in stock in my size. This offers seven different formats including a peaked Jet style which would be very useful when riding into the evening sun. But everything seemed a bit flimsy and the padding didn't match my head. So no thanks.

The one I was really looking forward to was the Nolan N43 Air. There's now a N43E Air which has some more features. In concept it's similar to the Caberg Hyper X, see below, but for me there's something wrong with the depth of the helmet--it sits too high on the head and the pull down sunshield cuts right across the field of vision. Adam at Helmet City also warned the top vents might not be waterproof in a downpour.

The one I kept going back to was the Caberg Hyper X. This has a detachable chin bar, and one side can be pulled out slightly to make it easier to put on. Plenty of room for glasses/sunglasses, though might have to take them off before the helmet is pulled off. The chin bar offers good bad weather protection, and the large visor overlaps the chin guard about 50%. What this means is that when the chin guard isn't in place, it's a huge deep visor with great wind protection.

The colour choices aren't great--white, black, black with silver, white with antracite. The size/colour I wanted isn't in stock so will have to be shipped to me next week. List price is £180, with the 10% off this would mean £162. We settled on £160 shipped.

I knew I could get it shipped to me for £150 from Caberg Helmet Shop but I was happy to reward Helmet City with the additional funds for the time Adam spent with me going over all the alternatives.

Hopefully the helmet will arrive in a few days time, when I'll update this thread with my thoughts. Many thanks to those who've offered advice and suggestions, especially darrenptalbot for suggesting I look at the Hyper X.

Hope you enjoy it - I'm still struggling to find anything significant to criticise ...

I've just bought an Evoline 3, really like it!

If you use the discount code 'sharkride' on the Mick Byrne website, you get 10% discount too, so it dropped it to £287, result!

Roof Suzuka

Nice report Tim, as mentioned the Roof does not seal properly and the "seat belt" type catch can be difficult to open with cold hands otherwise a nice helmet. As you see in the attached photos i took a tumble recently, I was wary of the stud mechanism of holding the chin bar down but on this occasion I had the chin bar down without doing up the studs and it remained closed during my tumble. Regarding the catch the paramedic had difficultly undoing it - I explained to him about the catch which he then managed to open - I was surprised he didn't just cut the strap!

I really like the Roof Boxer V8 and the Caberg Sintesi Helmet

I like the Sintesi too, but isn't it too heavy?
In this review he mentions that it's the heaviest helmet he has ever seen!

I've been using the Sintesi II, as reviewed, and that is a very accurate review. It is heavy, but, solid - size also makes a big difference as the Sintesi only has two shell sizes and if you can get in the small shell size (sizes up to M 57-58 IIRC) it's manageable. It is also fairly noisy - I can't use it other than short trips around town without earplugs (I have an old Arai flip which is much quieter).

But, the sunvisor is excellent and fits easily over my specs, it fits my head! (which, as Tim mentioned is kind of important), and the Just Speak Bluetooth system has proved excellent. So, you pays your money...you takes your choice; on the subject of which, mine only cost me £120 last summer - since then the UK distributors have clamped down somewhat on retailer discounting meaning that you only very occasionally see them advertised for less than £224.

Another plus for the Boxer. I've just got my second - the first "Classic" lasted me almost daily for 8 years. Only the manky liner finally meant it had to go. The new one is even better - washable innards, and venting, which was a bit of an issue on the old one. Got caught in a storm at the weekend, and it didn't leak or fog up. Bonus.

People say the fit is odd. Well, I also have a Tour-X, and a system 4 (flip and full) and it fits the same as those, only with more comfort if anything as the padding is a bit more plush. I don't do Shoei or Shark - wrong shape for me. The Roof is quieter than the Arai (with the peak on anyway), about the same as the BM flipper, but not quite as piano as the FF (assuming the Roof Closed of course). But best of all it's just so versatile. Can't really see the point of the extra £ for teh stealth V8 unless you really want the other visor. The slight tint non-fog that comes with the V8 seems a pretty good all-rounder. Oh, and BTW, the old Boxer visors will fit the new ones if yuu have about 10 mins and are handy with a craft knife; you just need to widen the hinge slot a touch. Classic visors are somewhat cheaper to obtain.

Devils Dyke - that's up the road from me ...
You don't happen to have a XL /XXL head do you?
