Speedo is fluctuating badly, dropping to zero then picking up again, and not reflecting true speed at all, higher and lower. Currently stuck on 30 mph parked in garage.

Yes, you're all going to tell me it's fecked but is there anything I can do about it?

She's old, she's just trying to work out how fast you're going.

Either that or repeating herself constantly which old people do quite alot:D

Check the cable turns freely, clean the worm gear up and check it for wear. If it's neither, then it's most probably fecked and should be replaced for one with less miles on it to increase the value:thumb2

Mine started doing the 'fluctuating' bit, then one day it shot off the scale and the needle snapped :blast.

I replaced it with a new one.

There was nothing wrong with the cable it was just old age and corrosion inside.

There are places that can rebuild them, but when I enquired there was a three month backlog - hence the new unit.

I've now got two old speedos in a box, I must get them rebuilt sometime .

Well...after a few miles at the weekend here's the latest on the speedo...

In 80 miles it hardly worked at all save for a short period of about 2 miles. The odometer IS working throughout and clocking up the miles so cable must be ok. However the trip meter isn't working save for the 2 miles when speed was showing.

The rest of the time the needle was stuck in various positions from 0 - 60mph.

Bizarre!!

Are they repairable?

Anyone got one sitting on the shelf?

Cheers

I had the same on my sidecar, clocked the mikes but no speed reading - speedo cable. Where in Essex are you based? We can always swap cables and eliminate that for starters. Drop me a pm

The guy that runs the 2-ventiler.de website did a good (and cheap) job of repairing my R100R speedo. Email him with photos at:

He's a very nice bloke, and fortunately speaks perfect English.

when you fit the cable make sure that it routes properly and does get tightened slightly twisted , that will also cause the inner cable to skip and fluctuate the needle.
