foam air filter

I know I'm going to get shot down, but is there anything wrong with the OE filter ?

Nothing - and have been told by some mechanic friends that you might as well have no filter in if you decide to use foam.

My own experience with filter elements in different industries leads me to agree with this.

And I was genuinely curious to know why anyone would consider doing so.

i phoned the guys at hilltop this week for some advise on what is the best set up for my gs (exhaust ,decat and filter ] he recommended a foam filter , dont no why but the oe filter for a tc is nearly twice the price off the sc filter so long term it would be cost affective to have a reusable one , i have used a k and n on my last gs for a good few years with no problems even though hilltop are not a big fan off k and n , as for foam filters i have a few off road bikes all with foam filters ,no problems and works well , so it looks like no one uses them and does nt like them

The originals are used because they are perfect and they WORK!!.

It is as simple as this. It is your bike and your money that you spend on it so you should do as you like

The biggest issue with foam and k&n is the hassle of cleaning, re oiling them etc etc. Depends on where you go and what you do I guess but the OEM ones work, are hassle free and take 2 mins to change.

Serious question here, has anyone found anything other than an OEM filter which gives an performance advantage?

As a serious answer i believe that the K&N would give a slight performance edge (very slight) but in the way it works would also allow more particles of "shit" in

That was the consensus when i was going down that route !
 
I have a Pipercross oiled foam filter. It's very sticky so I'm sure perfectly good at providing clean air. K&N however are one thin layer of cotton with sticky oil so I'm less sure about them.
Why do I have one?
I got it cheap and because oiled foam is OEM on many bikes.
Is it better than paper?
Who knows.

Bollox. Enduro bikes use oiled foam filters.

They have to because paper turns to mush. Not necessarily the best option for filtering particles of dirt, but better than a soggy wet paper filter. Reusing foam is a no no in my opinion as it is very easy to damage the foam matrix. At most wash and reuse once, I preferred to renew every time.
