I've mentioned before that I used to own a R80GS for some years. I've just found some pics in an old box and it brought back great memories. Just thought I'd share and show you what she looked like. Jeeze I miss that bike.
Pics taken after a service and a cleanup and that's me in the black jacket and blue shirt looking anxious at getting her dirty again.
but, it's been replaced with my newer beauty which I love almost as much...
I agree. The early models were designed and built properly. BMW went to shit after 1987. I should know. I owned/suffered a 1992 R100GS for 7 years. At least you can pick an airhead out of a ditch without getting a hernia!
Nope, although I do feel nostalgic about my old bike I do think the current GSA is in a totally different class. Smooth, powerful, tough and very well thought out.
It used to be hard work riding the R80GS long distances. I did a Pretoria to Cape Town trip (about 1000miles) once, did it all in one go without stopping for a proper brake (just a quick piss and some food). The bike was relatively light so the wind blew you all over the place. Also, in some of the cases the bike ran very hot and so I would have to stop and wait for it to cool down a little before carrying on.
All in all it was the best bike that I've ever owned until now
Well said sn1p3r, as a previous owner of an 81 G/s and the current owner of a 93 R80GS and a GSA...the pre oil heads are best viewed through rose tinted specs
