Hi all,

I removed the left side foot peg support on my R1150GS in order to fit a Touratech piece. Strange thing is, I am unable to get the top bolt on the support to go back in. It will thread in a small ways then simply stop, and become incredibly hard to turn.

The one I'm referring to is the top bolt marked C in the top photo on this PDF: http://www.touratech-usa.com/media/anixYV/09-041-0632-1.pdf

Anyone know how I can get it back in? I currently have a GS that I can't ride

Thanks,
Awfers

Put a jack under the gearbox to lift it up a touch, it can drop a little when you remove the bolt:thumb

Thanks, will try that.

I already tried putting weight on the seat to get the black frame member to line up correctly, which it did. It's almost as if the bolt will start to slant sideways as it goes into the hole?

Or does it have nothing to do with the frame and there's something else that's not lining up?

I should note, the bolt was incredibly hard to remove to begin with.

Try slackening the bolt on the other side as well.

Did you try and fit all bolts loosley first?

Yup, what they said :thumb2

Loosen up all bolts in associated with it so you have a bit of 'wiggle room', and if the other bolt is the same (I can't rremember) try swapping the other one for the one that won't go in, as this iffy one is likely to have had the threads a bit damaged in the process.

A bit of copper grease wouldn't go amiss either, and poke out the hole and threads with an oily cotton bud first in case there's a bit of thread swarf clogging things up :thumb

Thanks all..

Tried loosening the other bolts, to no avail... Solution that worked was to run a tap and die to clean out the threads. It seems that BMW puts some sort of loctite substance in these threads?

Anyway, problem solved.. Copper grease installed :-)

Thanks all for your help!

Frame to gearbox tube bolt.

BMW service manual says:

Frame tube to gearbox
1. to gearbox and left footrest plate 42Nm (clean thread + Loctite 243)
2. clamp block, frame tube to gearbox 9Nm
3. to gearbox and right footrest plate 42Nm (clean thread + Loctite 243)

Copper grease will help you get it out next time if it doesn't come loose in the meantime.
Just changed the clutch and slave cylinder in mine and had the whole frame undone and gearbox off. I tapped out the threads to get rid of the old loctite, then re-loctited them.

Word of warning...... if you have a suspect clutch slave cylinder, change it before the seals go and cover the clutch plates in brake fluid!:(

Dont bother with loctite, just do the bolt up tight. There is no reason for the numerous loctited bolts on the GS other than BMW like to keep the paranoid on edge.:D

Not so sure about that.
It amazes me what eventually works loose when exposed to some hard use and vibration.
Nothing wrong with a small dab of loctite, in the right place.
Just don't go mad with it.

If BMW specify Loctite and a torque setting you may want to think about upping the torque if you assemble it dry. The wet Loctite acts as a lubricant so the clamping pressure will be higher than if assembled dry.

Then of course if you increase the torque you may strip a thread:green gri
