Forgive GPS muppetry!

Early next month I shall have a new R1200GS.

If I were to write a shopping list of items required to kit it out with a GPS system that will transfer to the car, what would I require, bearing in mind that I have an Autocom Pro-7 system and the bike is currently stock.

Is the 2610 the preferred GPS amongst you experts?

Sell me a system!!

I bought my Garmin Streetpilot III from Adventure Motorcycling. Kit included everything neede for bike and car. At the time they were the cheapest but that was over a year ago (before the 2610 was available). I think the the SPIII is discontinued now.

asking "What GPS?" is like asking "What bike?". Use your friend...

...to get a good idea of what people are using, then come back and ask any questions you need to clear up specific areas you need help with.

Alternatively, if you think you've narrowed it down to a couple of different models, ask if anyone in your area can arrange to meet you and demo them to you...

I take your point, but current favourite seems to be the 2610. I have no wish to have it in my pocket whilst wandering on foot, so seems to fit the ticket.

But being 100 miles away from my nearest BMW dealer (take a look at the map to see Oban!), it's difficult to see things in the flesh and sure as anything, there are no kitted GSers in the vicinity! It's all very well living in nice scenery, but it has its drawbacks!

So my queries are things like powere supplies, extra accessory sockets, mounting kits and so on. I need to ask the questions from those in the know.

Ahh but there will be this coming Sunday..... There's a John Clark BMW rideoot tae Oban. All being well, I'll be there with my Streetpilot III kitted 1200 and I'd guess there's a fair chance of someone being there with a 2610.

There are pics of both a SPIII and a BMW Navigator II which is essentially a 2610, mounted on Dutchman's bike with the Motorrad Concepts Mount. I'm also using a short RAM arm mounted on the Motorrad Mount to bring the GPS Unit closer to me and to allow me to adjust its angle.

Keep your eyes peeled for the old Bill. I'm not sure what they are using this year, but I have seen a 'plain clothed' Pan European that was fitted with cameras front and rear!

Consider the Quest

Hi,

Your choice of GPS is to a degree dictated by the type of use you have in mind?

Will you be a regular user, occassional etc etc?

I've just got my Garmin Quest, and have to say it's the dogs danglies... i would class myself as a "medium" user, looking to use between car and bike.

I have found it to be superb in every way, the screen is smaller than that of the 2610, but it's more than big enough to be extremely clear in use on my R1200GS!, It has basically all the same features as the 2610, but is in a smaller package and without the touch screen. Functionality wise, they perform pretty much identically from what i can see.

I took a 600 mile trip from home, up to and around the lake district and back again, I had my Quest, and a friend on the trip had his 2610.... the friend in question even commented on the fact that if he were to choose again, he'd seriously consider a Quest instead of the 2610 !!

The main advantages i see to the Quest, are that it's rechargeable battery powered, it's smaller (but big enough) it's almost Half the price yet every bit as detailed/accurate as the 2610...

You basically get the same functionality (routing/detail wise) in a smaller box...

I think it takes a lot of beating, there are a large number of 2610's out there, but don't forget they were around a lot longer than the Quest, it's a relatively new unit, and bikers are starting to really take note of it....

Don't just pick the 2610 "because lots of others have it" Have a good look at it, consider your useage, and requirement, then make your own decision....

you'll find many members on here already use the Quest... and many use the 2610....

i'm sure people will happily pass on their experiences....

Two other choices, the Garmin 276c and the soon to be, Tomtom Rider.

On a price bases alone, the Quest would take some beating and you can buy it lots of place now, over the counter.
