Fork leg top dust cover.

One of the rubber fork leg top covers has perished and I would like to replace it. Can I simply undo the chrome stanchion top nut, push the stanchion down, fit new rubber and button it back up again? Or do I need to remove the wheel, fork leg etc?

You need to stabilise the front wheel and also once you start to drop the stanchion there is a very small 3mm hex allen key under that rubber cover AND an o ring below the allen

Do no drop / loose the O ring they are a bastard size!!

Undo above bars the Nuts can be as tight as Eff!!!

Below the top yoke I think that is a 21or 22 mm hex and above is a 14mm Nyloc BUT Make sure that you have a decent 6 sided socket for above the bars preferably one with very little "rounding" at the Nut end They slip off D A M H I K

Undo the nut and run it off

Lower the stanchion Undo and remove the 3mm allen, this will allow it to slide down or be removed without fighting with it

Slide it down I usually remove the stanchion it as I am doing fork seals

When reassembling I "usually" put the allen/o ring in and snug it about 2 cm from locating it in the Yoke

And re assemble

Used a nice 14mm 6 sided socket and 22mm spanner. Came undone just fine. The stanchion dropped enough to put the new rubber top cover on.
Pushed leg back in, tightened nut to 45Nm.
In case someone else does this, don't forget to put the pry slot in the plastic top cap in a position where you can get to it easily incase it needs removing again in the future.
As it was just this I needed to change I didn't touch the little Allen bleed screw.

That’s the way to do it.
Undo nut, push stanchion down half inch and out of top yolk, replace rubber top cover, locate back into top yolk.
2 minute job
