Fork Slip

Houston, I think we have a problem. Went to check the fork sliders like Ian mentioned only to immediately notice that the left slider was 'jammed'. Up/down was not a problem, however it didnt rotate freely, it was kind of stuck with little rotation either way unless I gave it some, which freed it but 360 degrees later the same. The slider on the left rotated 360 effortlessly. I didn't bother undoing any bolts to check the sliders after noticing this.

I'm guessing I've got an expensive problem on my hands. Would it be the slider only or both slider and stanchion?

Called my mechanic to explain, he told me from what I've said the slider is bent. Fair enough. He also told me that if there are no kinks/dents it can be fixed.......yay or nay? I think I read on here that this is possible???

Normal chromed steel fork legs can be straightened, but not the sliders.

Bent aluminum alloy usually cracks if you try to bend it straight. These have short steel legs with long aluminium alloy sliders tubes, so its looking expensive. :(

I'll state the obvious. Swop the stanchions over (a 5 minute job) and see if the problem stays where it is or moves to the other leg, or is now in both legs :D.

listen to Yoda denny he knows his onions :D:D:D:D

Both sliders were out today, the left one is visibly bent. Damn! The right one slides in & out of both stanchions and looks to be ok. Bent slider with mechanic who will have it straightened. He tells me that he has done this many times before without any negative feedback...

Sorry to be a bit anal, but I'm a little confused from your last post as to what is bent. You see the fixed tubes commonly referred to as stanchions slide in and out of the lower tubes called sliders. Actually to be mechanically correct the slider tubes slide up and down the stanchions.

So which is bent?

Is it the fixed tube, thats the upper chrome part called a stanchion.

Or

The slider tube, the lower part, the bit that holds the wheel.

Sorted!

This bike has different suspension to normal bikes, so the terminology means different things, which is why it can get confusing.

Glad it's being sorted and the damage was only slight and fixable.:thumb2

Are you sure the whole complete thing isn't bent ? Just get another off eBay.

The whole thing isn't bent because the other stanchion slides in and out of both sliders.
Hence my post about swopping stanchions from one leg to the other.
If the free stanchion was then sticking this means the slider would also be bent.
If the original sticking stanchion stuck in the other slider the stanchion is bent.
If both got stuck after swopping it's all fecked. :D

When I said the whole thing I meant half of the whole thing is bent :D
I bet the lower stanchion is out of true if the top bit is bent in that half of the whole thing.
Just get an upper and lower off eBay and swap it over. :thumb

It does have some extra bits and there's only one spring in a different location but it should still have straight rigid bits called stanchions attached to the headstock via a yoke and bits that slide on them called sliders:)

I'll see how it goes after it's been straightened/fixed. If still fecked then I'll have a word with Colt and see if we can come to some sort of agreement :D

I know, but Denny was referring to the stanchions as sliders, which if you read the thread gets a little confusing, as other people are referring to the sliders as sliders, and the stanchions as stanchions.

When your trying to diagnose, and give people advise on fault finding, it helps if everyone knows what parts being referred to, else it gets confusing.:thumb2
