forkbrace - fuel tank

Hello

Is it normal that the upper plate (forkbrace ) that fixe the front suspension and handle bar hit the tank?


Mine does when turning left…

I presume you mean the top steering yoke?

No it shouldn't

Some people pull the handlebars back a tad to much and these smack the tank as well !!

Just remind me what tank you have fitted? Is it a HPN?

What could be a possible reason?

It is often caused by a damaged/bent/displaced steering lock. The damage can either be on the frame or the bottom yoke.

It can also be caused by the tank being too big in the front section (Ie non standard BM tank), or possibly mounted too far forward 'not properly located on it's mounting point'.

Hello

I have 2 tanks. One normal R100GS tank (1990 bike) and a R80 PD 32 L tank

My PD tank was professionally modified and I thought that steering yoke was hitting the tank because the tank could be, for some strange reason, deformed…

Now I installed the original tank and the problem is still there. So the problem is not from the tank. (BTW I’m selling the PD tank)


I must cheque if the steering lock is OK

And how can I chek if the tank is in the right position?

There is a lug at the front of the steering column that acts on the bottom yoke and stops the steering turning too far (Not sure if this is what Val is referring to, or the actual steering locking mechanism) either way (lockstop).
On mine I have a HPN/Acerbis tank and the indicators touch the tank on both sides so I made up a small 'U' shaped bit of metal and bolted it to the lockstop thus reducing how far the bars will turn. The reduction in side-to-side lock is negligible.

What Brassmonkey says, in the front of the headstock is a square stub welded to the headstock. The lugs on the bottom of the fork yoke hit this and stops the steering moving further around and hitting the tank etc. This lug is welded on and has been known to come away ( simply tack back on if you find it..it happened to mine and was on the garage floor !! ). This is the only reason I can think of for the yoke etc hitting your tank...I think you'd know about it if it was due to crash damage

I will check the square stub. I remember that I had a small of road crash that could eventually bended the stub

If the lower yoke stub is broken..either blob weld ( not easy ) onto it or file flat and drill tap/bolt for an allen bolt to go in so the head acts like the original stub

Looks like you'll have to take a photo of the front of the headstock and of the top of the bottom yoke ! If both your petrol tanks are seated correctly then the problem must lay with the headstock/bottom yoke .
