Hi All,

I've been asked with helping a friend plan a surprise present for her Husband, in the form of a bike trip (which I might also therefore join.)

The remit is 4-5 days, Europe, Fly and hire, mainly road, if not all road. Doesn't have to be Dolomites,

Unsure on budget, but it's a big birthday.

Appreciate fly and hire isn't the most common approach from those on here, but any input would be helpful,

I did see this on another thread, looked very interesting: https://romaniamotorcycletours.com/guided-tours/

Cheers

Can’t help with the Dolomites. We did a fly ride tour of Sardinia a few years ago using motorent Sardinia IMG_0219.jpg
They booked accommodation in advance and gave us the sat nav routes. We bought (for a laugh) and used Beeline as a sat nav. The bikes were two 850 and one 1250 GSs. The hotels were of a very good standard, the bikes were very well maintained and just about new. The office was walking distance from olbia airport. Definitely recommended.
Sardinia was a great place to tour by bike.

many here have stayed in some of these hotels in Austria and the Dolomites. Some rent out bikes. They used to be all BMW but I some of the hotels have Honda now.

I've used the Enzian and Weisseespitze. The latter was a better quality hotel but remote. The Enzian is in the large town of Landeck. Both offered a shuttle service from Innsbruck airport.

I think the Lets Bike Together partner hotels have motorbikes you can rent by the day. They have 3 hotels in the Dolomite area. I have stayed at all 3 over the years. Hotel Gran Paradis and Hotel Condor are both top notch with nice leisure facilities (pool, sauna, etc). Their 4 or 7 day packages at Half Board are pretty good.

Thank you all for the input, I'll filter through and pass onto the his wife!!

You don`t say when. This might influence the destination - the Dolomites is not a good place to be on two wheels at this time of year.
It could be one of the islands such as Tenerife, or Sicily, or Majorca.

Question 1. When?

Question 2. Is he / you a DIY type person ie. Fly out, buy a map, find a hotel and hire a bike? Or are you / he, more “We want to fly out and have it all done”? There is nothing wrong with either option.

The Dolomites is a great choice and can probably be done under both scenarios.

I don’t actually know either, assuming spring / summer

1 - I think spring summer, up to her to be frank

2 - I appreciate either, but I think more the latter, given it’s a short trip he’ll want the most bang for buck, no faffing around, hotel to bike in shortest time possible.

1. Don’t be too early in the spring, in case some of the passes are still closed.

2. Get started by looking around sites:

I. Google search using Motorrad mieten Dolomiten. Yes, it’s German but Google and other search engines provide very good translations. Why is it German? Because Germans do far more motorcycle touring than Brits.

II. https://www.rentaride.bmw-motorrad.com/de/destinations/bolzano.html

III. https://www.moho.info/mohos-mit-motorradverleih

IV. https://www.dolomites-tour-ride.com/de/bmw-motorradverleih-by-rent-a-boxer

V. https://www.motorentmeran.com/

In short, there’s a shedload of rental companies and hotels. That said, you won’t be the only bods with this cunning plan. My tip would be to book up early, especially if you want a specific make or model of bike.

Don’t want to do it all yourself?Maybe contact Simon Weir, the former editor of BiKE magazine. He will charge (he’s not a charity) but he may well have ideas and contacts, which might take some or all of the legwork out of it.

Fly to Salzburg and hire bike , Herz do bike hire from their office at Salzburg Airport ( 30 steps from the front door of the arrival terminal) ... F800GS, R1300GS or R1250RT available , 2 hours to the Grossglockner and then just over another hour or two into the Dolomites

I’ve got the expert on it . Standby18D33122-6E7C-4534-BBFE-034748D1A337.jpg

I’ve stayed at the hotel Enzian (mentioned above) a few times now. They have a whole range of current BMW bikes you can hire on a daily/weekly/whatever basis. If you want it all on a plate so to speak, they also have resident guides who know all of the routes, or they can download them onto Sat nav for you. It’s ideally located for a day in Austria, a day in Bavaria, a day in Italy and a day in Switzerland. Food at the hotel is excellent as is the bar and service.

If you fancy Spain instead I can recommend a friend Graham Swann of GSMotorcycle Tours based just outside of Malaga, fly in and guided or self guide tours. Choice of bikes, BMW and Triumph from memory. https://www.gsmotorcycletours.com/
I did the Countryside 6 day tour and it was exceptional. Give him my name as we go back a way. Phone or email I think.

Just to give you a flavour of the bike offering, this is the Grizzly's line up (part of the Let's Bike Together group mentioned above), both BMW & Honda: -

Don't forget to book insurance that's tailored for biking, not just general travel cover.

Then there is the excess - I don't know of any UK offerings for motorcycle hire excess cover but it may be possible to pay a small extra premium on site. We did this with Eagle Rider in the US - Maybe @Wapping can advise.
