It’s just over two weeks now since we returned from Spain and the Moto Piston Rally and I have just about sorted the photos into some sort of useable format with quite a bit of help, I might add from no. 1 son Dan and Mrs bubbles.

So here goes, it all started back at the beginning of the summer when our friend Graham came down to spend a few days with us in Cornwall on his Yamaha scooter from his home in Surrey. Sat around the fire in the evening with a glass of wine, talk turned to bike mags and Motor Cycle Sport and Leisure which we both read and the MSL Tours advertised inside. One of these was to the Moto Piston Rally in the Picos Mountains in Northern Spain and we had both spotted it and thought it looked good value. As it happened Graham is on first name terms with Pete and Gloria Avard, who run MSL Tours from his days of owning a motorcycle clothing shop in Guildford, so rang them there and then and booked us on the trip.

About a month before, the details of the tour were posted to us along with a list of about 60 others also on the tour. Departure day was to be Wednesday 8th October from Plymouth, so Graham and his wife Tosca travelled down to Cornwall the weekend before to stay a few days with us before the trip. We had both talked about taking our old BMs and entering the Rally, as to take part the bike has to be over 25 years old. But in the end decided in the interest of keeping the ladies happy to take modern bikes and follow the rally at our leisure. That’s my excuse anyway!

By way of introductions here’s some pictures of the four of us……

by 9pm we were out of the channel and heading down the Atlantic coast of France at just over 27mph, I'm sure the nautical types can tell us how many knots that is.

MSL tours

Myself and friends did the Moto Legend tour with MSL last year and like yourselves we read their mag and very good it is to. our trip was great fun and wanted to do the same trip as yourselves but work commitments spoilt the plans:tears still we can hope that next year we may go. great pics look forward to the conclusion. :thumb2. Ok heres Part 2.

Arrival time at Santander was 8.30am. So there was just time for a quick breakfast and sort the cabin out before heading down to the car deck to reclaim the bikes.

Here we are ready to head up the ramp........

and out onto Spanish concrete ........

After a brief passport check it was out onto the damp roads of a Santander rush hour, with British bikes heading in all directions.
We had originally planned to head for the Albatros Hotel in Suances, and drop off our luggage, where we were booked to spend the next four nights. This was about 20km west along the coast from Santander, but due to my inept use of the gps we totally missed it. so decided to carry on the further 40km to Colombres which was the main hub of the Moto Piston Rally.

We stopped along the way here for coffee.....

The owner spoke English and proudly pointed out many places of interest in his local area on our maps......

Then we carried on to the tourist information office at Colombres, which had been taken over as the Rally control centre. There we were told in no uncertain terms by a British women who was dishing out information to the Rally entries, that modern bikes were not welcome and we could not follow the Rally routes. This was the only time we heard anything like this and at all other times everyone and anyone was made most wellcome, whatever bike they came on, or any other form of transport for that matter.

As most of the rally participants had already left on 200km High Mountain Route ride we decided to head off into the mountains......

More to follow........

Part 4

Friday was the start of the 5000 Curvas Road Trial from Colombres at 8.30am. But by the time we had breakfasted and ridden the 40km to Colombres most of the bikes had left, so we parked up in the town and just soaked up the atmosphere.

This UK rider on his MZ had just handed in his completed ride sheet and been presented with his trophy, he certainly looked pleased even though he said he had lost a gear along the way.

Certainly thinking about next year Tony, I would very much like to take the 80/7 as its old enough to enter the rally. :)
