I am trying to locate the position of the frame number on my 2004 1150 GS.

Also I have been given advisory at MOT station that the front brake discs are warped. The bike has only covered 16 000 miles. Is this normal for the discs to warp at this sort of mileage ?

Any advice and comments would be welcome !

Regards

Phil

Hi Phil, I'm sorry to see nobody has responded to your shout for help, I've been away from the forum for a short while myself. Will shift your thread over to the 1150 section where I think you may get a better response to your query.

BTW Welcome to UKGSer :) Hope you get sorted soon.

PS: Try the head stock for the frame number :thumb2 sorry I cant help with the brake disc problem.

not necessarily normal for the brake disc to warp, but not necessarily impossible. Usually happens (as I understand) when you've been braking alot, got heat in the disc, then stop for a while whilst holding the brake on. The pads concentrate heat in one spot or something... If its that warped, you should notice under gentle braking... ?

A pulsing brake pedal/lever is another possible symptom, are the discs showing wear, grooving etc ?

Discs

Hi

I have covered over 100,000 miles on my 02 1150 GS and still running the original front discs, and look to do so for some time yet.

I have had to replace the bobbin bolts and spring washers as they were chattering over bumps and the noise was annoying. It never impeded braking or caused an MOT failure.

The rear disc, however, is a different story. I have had to replace that at least 5 times due to warping. I do tend to drag the rear around bends which is probably the cause. I have now fitted a wavy disc on the rear which appears to have lasted longer.

Back to the front though, the GS front wheel should spin very freely once on the centre stand and you should see the wheel binding if the discs are warped, as well as feeling it in the lever as posted above.

Simple job to replace though, if that's what you end up doing. Make sure you replace the pads at the same time.

Phil the frame number is thel ast 7 digits stamped on the black ally haedstock below the steering head on the right hand side Yours will probably be ZE or ZF xxxxx Should also be on your V5 there are more letters and numbers before but it's the last 7 that are the important ones

AS to brakes how you use them matters Long slow down applications puts a lot of heat on them and then maybe holding long times in traffic?? Who knows?

Normally I'd say that the brakes are binding but then the MOT station would have told you that???

Phil,
Before forking out on new discs take yours off and use a wire brush to clean the surfaces where they mount on the wheel. You get crap and corrosion there and it just needs to be cleaned off.

I had the same thing as you. I spent £200 on discs and got the same warped feeling a few thousand miles later. Nowt wrong with either the old or new discs. It's a service item for me now.

Ah the old 1150 front warped front disc issue - almost as popular as the what oil question.

Was advised that my brakes were warped - 11,000 miles :eek though I felt no difference and could not see any pulsing when spinning the wheel.

Completely forgot about it when the next MOT came around - again advisory notice.

took a gamble for the 3rd MOT (though prices of discs had been researched) - passed with no advisory notices - go figure!

There is a thread on here - someone had the same issue. He took the brakes apart and gave them a good clean (including removal of the discs) - this sorted the problem out.

Warped............One of my front discs is:mad:

10,000 miles old (since they were last replaced under BMW warranty)

Measured them and one is 0.074 runout and the other is 0.151 runout

Going to replace the buggered one this week, fit new pads too

Can't stand the low speed pulsing:mmmm

Previous owner must have been a constant braker:blast
