I was wondering whether anyone else is having a similar problem to the one shown in the photograph. My left boot has worn the paint off the frame. I wear BMW Touring boots with BMW Rallye-2 trousers over the boots, so there is only fabric rubbing against the frame. I will be speaking with my dealer today about it being a warranty issue, but in the meantime, I'd suggest that to avoid the problem in the future, it would be a good idea to put clear protective tape over that part of the frame.
Will post the dealer's response later.

Hi Vampire

I have had the same problem. Dealer was willing to touch up the frame with a bit of paint and put some clear protective tape over it.

Only problem was that I had to book my bike in for a service and this was in a few weeks time.

I got them to put some tape over it right away and will do the spray on the 6K service.

No further problems with the tape on, now just to have it put back to silver.

Where to get clear protective tape? I want to put some on my fork ends as well.

3M do a thick, clear protective tape - called 'helicopter tape'

perfect for this application - also for shaped sections for tank rubbing areas.

theres only one place in Woking i know to get it - but it is available generally

This tape is probably the neoprean (spelling??) sacrificial tape used on the leading edge of helicopter blades. Very tough but it discolours to a sad nicotine yellow within days due to exposure to light.

WARRANTY CLAIM!
gods teeth, Vampire, get a grip, it's YOUR fault, stand up and be counted ferrchrissakes. What are you after, a new frame?

May I suggest a scooter.

Mine and a friends have worn the same, I have touched up with silver paint and then put carbon amour designed for pedal cycles, purchased fro Halfords, to stop further wear.

Now, now, don’t get you knickers in a knot, I am simply doing as you suggest to “stand up and be counted ferrchrissakes”.
Just as we post on this site to inform other owners and forewarn of potential problems, the purpose of submitting a warranty claim on the manufacturer is to inform of design / production issues that could be improved.
If we, the owners, don’t tell them, who will?
Compare the current crop of dirt bikes with those of earlier periods and you will see a host of minor design changes intended to preserve the look and finish of the motorcycle. You can be certain that many of those changes were as a result of customer feedback, not simply manufacturer largesse.
The paint problem is fair “wear and tear” occasioned by the motorcycle being used in accordance with the design intent.
BMW made the 1200 narrower than the 1150 to make it easier to control in unsealed road / off-road use. The paint problem is caused by the sandpaper-like effect of dirt and grit being ground between my boot and the frame.
As for a scooter, I don’t own one because it just won’t take me where I want to go.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some interesting tracks to explore.
Ciao,

I agree with eyeguy here. If what you say above is the case whats to stop us all claiming new tyres under warranty?
'Fair wear and tear guv - they wore out whilst i was using it in accordance with the design intent.' I think not. Anyway I thought fair wear and tear was not covered by warranties??

If you admit as you do, what is causing you to rub the paint off I would suggest that any manufacturer is going to politely (or not) suggest you cease and desist getting grit and rubbing it against the frame with your boot.

Same problem on mine, also riding with BMW boots. But with the trousers inside the boots. The BMW boots have the velcro closures on the inside, which, I suspect, adds to the problem. The bike is due for a 10,000km service next week. I'll check whether the dealer has some touch-up paint, and then put some protective film over it.

Mmm, do they use waterpaint or so? Have a R100R mystic for 70.000 km's and wear army boots. Not a scratch.
