re france

hi we are heading down on the 16th july to annecy for 8 nights, the plan is we are camping, dover to calais ferry all other ferries were a fortune,3 nights in annecy base camp i have routes all around annecy to go play on without the luggage etc, then we are going down to menton, nice st tropez, monaco, back through verdun ranges to annecy over to the bike geo week:beerjug:couple of more routes to complete back home the 25th july.done france e few times never had bother with speed cameras, this now seems to have changed enjoy the trip

Hi cutmorej, thanks for that, oddly enough, I could be going down the exact day you are, still trying to sort out my leave, The two weeks I'm allowed off may well fall on your dates though I'm trying to get the following two. Anyway, safe journey, are you going straight to Annercy from calais in one go or splitting it? The dearly beloved is starting to see the logistics of visiting all the places she wants to, even on our cut down intinerary. Still, she said she wants an adventure, well her arse is going on one, (and I mean that in a clean way moderator)

Doctorsmudge, would you like all the routes you need, turn by turn, from Calais to a very good distance down the Route Napoleon (and the gorges) and back to Calais? All in an Excel format?

£12 for site sponsorship and they are yours.

Why the £12? Why not, it goes towards UKGSer's running costs.....and it will save you having to post your email address for the spammers to see.

Which leads me to another question, do you need to book accomadation ahead or can we pull up anywhere and book in?

I used to just turn up, but nowadays with online reservations virtually everywhere, it's a comfort to have a confirmation, though it does tie you to a fixed itinery, unless you have online access to modify bookings as you go.
viamichelin is good for online maps and you can show nearby hotels along your route or area of interest. Logis are often good stops. They're all independant hotels, syndicated under the Logis brand and there's normally one close by.
If you're blatting it down to Dover in one go, I'd recommend the the Etap at Cocquelles about 0.5miles from the tunnel exit. - For about €40 it's clean and tidy and does what it says on the tin, so you can get off to a fresh start next day.

Apart from the cameras, watch out for traffic cops hiding together in the bushes like gays! :ymca:ymca

cameras fixed, mostly forward facing..

And so it used to be! Now they are either putting rearward facing cameras in the same boxes or turning the things around, guess how I found that out!:anger:

They don't seem to be making much progress about EU wide traffic offence agreements so I think it will be at least five years before the fixed cameras present a threat to foreigners.
Just a reminder, over here fines are related to the amount by which you exceed the speed limit, it gets serious after 50kph over. This means 112.5mph on the autoroute and 87.5mph on national roads. Up to those speeds it will be very expensive but it is unlikely they will confiscate your bike.
Watch out for the 30kph limits in towns, really difficult to comply with but they are enforcing them! Don't forget, they will nick you for being 2kph over the limit!
Fortunately one can still make enjoyable progress when well away from towns/villages but the way things are going that won't last forever.

Hi Wapping how do i go about subscribing and getting the routes?

Excellent.

Scroll up the page.

To the left, just beneath the banner heading, there is a shortcut: Click Here To Subscribe.

Once you have signed up you can send me a PM with your email address. I will then send you the routes. As a subscriber you can access the For sale and wanted sections (that may well pay for itself in one transaction) and use the other full functions.

I can give you a route from Aix to Avignon, down the Ardeche gorge and then to the Cevennes and the Tarn Gorge finishing up at the bridge.

Shenzi, I would be very grateful for a copy of that route as well if possible...many thanks..Tony

Are you glued to Dover Calais. I'd suggest Hull Zeebrugge and think of it as a cruise. You sleep overnight on the boat and get off after breakfast in Belgium. First hour blast down Belgian motorways, as recommended elsewhere, until you reach the scenic routes. Hull - Zeebrugge also means that you don't have to spend your time dreading the long journey back through Gordon's Britain. It also means on your last day, you get off the boat in Hull after breakfast and can have a good ride back home.

Might cost a wee bit more, but you save petrol, tyres and save paying for a night in a hotel in Kent or northern France.

He's scottish isn't he? The Hull / Zeebrugge cost difference to Dover / Calais pays for nearly all the fuel you'll use on the trip. I'm a Yorkshireman living in Hull and even I ride down to Dover!!

Riding in France

Since its your first time you might just want to do a little research on French driving habits - stuff like the dreaded priorite a droite (you really need to look out for this), car drivers pulling onto the verge to let you past, signalling habits, road sign conventions and such like.

Also, be aware that fuel can be difficult to come by at weekends.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Good advice from Stolzy! I thing Wapping is right about subscribing to get all the benefits of the forum, we all pay!
No problem sending routes to anyone who PMs me, I have lots!

I'm beginning to think tha trying to see so much in one hit will mean a mad rush riding round everywhere, the whole point was no real itinarary, just follow out noses, but we (she) doesn't want to just flash through places, you know, stop in a little village, walk around etc etc. So I'm beginning to agree with cutmorej by basing myself somewhere and going for days out. There really is so much to see. It will also give me the excuse to go back for a few years. I now have my dates for leave, so its from 26th July and the week from 2nd Aug. Is there a recommended travel insurance? And, is it possible to have an open ended ferry ticket. We didn't want to be tied to a return day as such, I originally was going for a week but with the option to stay an extra few days if needed.

OK

Now let's look at it again.

(1) It's good that you are slimming down your plans. There is lots to see and do in France but the attractions do not go away, so they will be there next year and the next decade.

(2) Find yourself a base and think about what your wife wants. If she (perched on the back) gets a strop on, you are dead meat and your holiday ruined. As you are crossing from Calais I would suggest somewhere around Dijon (half way between Calais and Marseille) or better still further south at, say, Dignes les Baines.

Find yourself a reasonable sized town as a base. That's why I suggest Dignes. Why? You want something to do when you are not on your bike. Big French towns (like the UK) have everything you will need.

I can give you a turn by turn route, all the way to Digne and back, along great roads (and / or with motorway escapes, if you have a problem) that will do everything you may want in a week and / or plus a few days. It will not kill you / your wife but give you a good taste of what goes on, what France looks like and has to offer. Not least it will give you an idea how far places are apart.

This last point is important. 350 miles on a motorway at an average speed of 60 (reality is often closer to 50) will take 5.8 hours. If you want to leave at 10am and stop for coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, it will take you most of the day into the mid-afternoon. Along D roads (the equivalent of our B roads) you will be lucky to average 40 (probably closer to 30). That may take you 11 hours, so leaving at 10 and stopping to enjoy the scenery every 10 minutes will not work.

If you run short of time, get on a motorway or main highway.... There is no shame in it. Knock off 50 miles in an hour (or less) or bugger around for more than two hours, lost in St Ulf de Lost on a hot afternoon or when it is lashing down. The choice is yours.

As you roll along the French motorway at an easy 80mph you will notice one thing. You are passing loads of trucks. Pull in for fuel or a tea break and the chances are you will see the same trucks steaming past you, or you will catch up with them again. Why? They are not stopping, just grinding out the miles at a steady 50 mph. When you are stopped you are not moving forward, it decimates your true average speed. The same simple mathematical fact gets amplified on smaller D roads, where your real life average speed is very much lower.

(3) Ferry ticket.

You know that you have to be back in Jockland by a certain time and on a certain day. You know that it will take one day from Dover to home. Book yourself a ticket that gives you a boat crossing to match the end target. Give yourself a bit of slack in the timing. That gives you the certainty you need. You can buy flexi-tickets, so it is no great drama coming home on an earlier boat.

(4) Travel insurance

BUY IT! There is lots of choice out there. I use the AA's. Another popular choice is the Post Office's policy. Just check very carefully
that the policy includes you and your wife and that it includes riding a large capacity (cc's) motorcycle. If you plan on more trips before next year, buy an annual policy. If you plan just to do two weeks away, buy a 21 day policy, say, to give yourself a bit of flexibility. It could well be the best few pounds you will ever spend..... If in doubt look for two threads on UKGSer. One is very sad (through a simple mistake) and the other could have been a horrible bloody mess (the words are apt) had the fellow not been very lucky.

Similarly make sure you have good European breakdown / recovery insurance for your bike. Again, it will be a great relief if you have a problem a long way from home.

(5) Don't worry about everything. Just do a bit of sensible planning (get the maps) and take a bit of sensible care. Yes, it is different across the water (that is what makes it more interesting than home) but it is 100% civilised all the way from northern Sweden to the tip of Italy or Spain. France is a nuclear power and sits as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. There is a simple reason for that.... France is not darkest Senegal.

Have a read through some of the threads in the Travel section / the trip reports. You will see that loads of people have asked the same questions (for very good reasons) and had the same concerns. Then see that, more often than not, they had a great time with no great dramas.

If you have any questions, shove them up on the board. There is a regular bunch of bods who can tell you all and anything about France. 99% of what they say is right.... The missing 1%? That's the really fun bit :thumb

OK.
Travel Insurance....... found a dedicated place for motorcycle touring £32 for the trip.
Subscription.............£12, best money ever spent, just for the advice alone from everyone.

Breakdown Insurance.........Bennets my insurers, will give me European and UK cover for £40 for the whole year.
Places to stay..........going to wing it on a daily basis, I dont want a strict time table. Now the dearly beloved is talking about staying away for 12 days, feckin wimmin. So maybe now looking to find two places to base ourselves for 3 days or so at a time. One place will probably be in the Grenoble area, the other maybe Provence/Avignon area.
No doubt, this will change along with the wind direction depending on the dearly beloveds wishes. Watch this space.
