Probably more relevant to the motorhome drivers :p

Free flow toll roads will eventually be everywhere in France. No barriers, no tickets, no toll collection on the road. They will use ANPR or read your TAG if you have one. If you use your tag in more than one vehicle, ensure the one you are using is registered. This is very easy on my Fulli account.

Video in French with subtitles on how to pay. Similar to ULEZ, open an online account, have a TAG account, pay online in arrears or pay at a shop in cash.

Also note that you only have 72 hours to pay before fixed penalties start to be levied (discounted for fast payment!). Note that the fees/fines are levied by the company that operates the road, not the gouvernement. And I've no idea if/how charging for those without a tag works for those outside the EU but I'd be amazed if they haven't already thought of that  The first person to try this without a tag can let us know!

I went through what I take to be a barrier free ‘automatic’ payage point in Normandy yesterday.

I simply drove at about 60 mph along the motorway, my blipper thing (I guess) being recognised by a detector.

The banners above the motorway, seem to say that you have 72 hours to pay. I guess that is if you do not have a blipper? How they will pursue British (blipperless) vehicles I have no idea.

It was a bit before here, on the motorway between Ranville and Honfleur.

Which sort of matches with the opening post’s reference to Caen.

Interesting or not, the conventional payage barriers seemed to be in place in the opposite direction.

Wonder if the toll operators have a deal with DVLA to pursue British non payers?
Still not ordered my tag but may just avoid motorways next month instead

Yes, it should bill correctly if the user is already registered (telepeage).
If not -> 72 hours to pay online.

Similar to what was in use in Portugal.

I'm sure the company that enforces ULEZ for UK PLC has been touting their services. They had a nice earner chasing people from the UK who had skipped tolls in Portugal. Now Portugal has removed tolls on most roads they will be keen to replace that income stream.

They had these in Portugal before Covid - and our tag worked every time.

I didn’t realise the tag beeps each time it has been read - until I had it in the car with me!

Snap.

I had always thought that the ‘beep’ came from the payage barrier itself. It wasn’t until I went through the barrier free toll and heard the ‘beep’ that the penny dropped.

Umpteen years and only yesterday did I twig.

Anyway, all jolly efficient.

Does anyone know if the tags work for different classes of vehicles? Motorhome, pickup, bike and car. This would make it very useful to me. A separate one for each vehicle not so much. Is there a monthly fee even when it is not being used?
Sorry about all the questions but I think it would certainly make it easier.

Yes they do.

I have one tag, which I use on my motorcycle(s), car(s) and motorhome. It is France only and is provided by Sanef’s office, here in the UK, who provide an excellent service. I have never had a problem with it. It is not vehicle specific; I have lent it to other people.

There is (allegedly) a problem sometimes with some twin wheel (double axel) motorhomes being misread but mistakes can be remedied very quickly.

Read the various providers’ websites for the specific terms and conditions, as they are not always all the same, especially when one has a promotion on. I have never bothered shopping around.

With the appearance of the barrier free tolls (see separate thread) the tags will become even more useful. Cue, moans from fobless bikermates, unable to pay / not realising they are on a tolled section / not being arsed to pay / missing the days when they could slowly remove their gloves and pay as slowly as possible at the barrier in protest at being ripped-off and rush their six mates through, to put one up the man.

No monthly fee when not being used. But: they will charge 10 euros for the year, if a tag is not used within a 12 months period. Still very cheap/forgettable at the end of the day.
I have 2 tags and paid the 10 quid fee this year for the bike one (forgot to exchange with the one in the car that is well used :) ).

I believe this depends on the deal being offered by the tag supplier. Our Fulli tag only charges a monthly fee if we use the tag in that month. We don't get charged a fee for months we don't use it however there is a 10€ charge if we don't use it in 24 months.

Fulli tag is 2 years before you incur a non-use charge.

I escaped this year by receiving an email to upgrade my device for one with new technology for the free flow stuff. It seems changing the tag has reset the clock on my account as I did not use it at all last year as we went to Germany.

Do the tags work in all of Europe?

Some do France only. Some do France/Italy/Spain/Portugal (countries with tolls).
I regularly travel through France and Italy (where I am at the moment) and I've been using Ulys for years happily. As said above, I have two tags.

Each vendor varies a tiny bit in their offering. Better compare.

There is The Thread on telepage blippers here: https://www.ukgser.com/community/threads/motorway-‘blipper’-smart-tags-for-all-news-advice-how-to-get-one-and-what’s-best-irrespective-of-the-country.299710/

Keep in mind you can use the tags to pay parking charges at some locations, that is very handy with RHD vehicles.
I have to say that this is, surprisingly, well implemented in Italy, especially at airports.
Shouldn't really be surprised because the French blippers are using Telepass (Telepass is the Italian blipper brand) hardware, apparently.

Another question. Do the tags work in all of Europe?

No, as not needed in all of Europe.

Some tags will work in the 4 pay per km countries of France, Italy, Spain & Portugal. I have the Fulli Nomade account. Other tags only work in France and with Emovis, you need a second device for Spain/Portugal.

one thing, with ANPR being rolled out across many regions rather than tag scanners, I advise getting a TAG that allows you to put your reg plate on the system. Fulli has this.
