Location
Dublin mostly!
My 550 has a 2010 map, so a bit out of date in some cases - motorway stops at Moate for example...
Anyhow, Glenboy and others recommended the following and I did it today, downloaded, unzipped, copied to Garmin folder on SD card and now I seem to have an up-to-date map for Ireland. Still have the Garmin map but it is unticked for now, could use it in Europe or UK if I did not manage to down load the corresponding opensource tiles.

When you select the mapping you require, there is a limit ISTR, it will then go off and compile the mapping for you and send you an email when it's done. This email contains a link back to their website and this page will contain links to download a variety of files for different purposes. You can download the file for the sat nav itself as well as files to install onto PC and Mac. From my experience these work in both Mapsource and Basecamp on my PC.

If you want to download numerous map-sets you will also need JaVaWa to enable you rename the previous OSM map-set and assign it a different ID. Failing to do that will mean that the last map-set gets overwritten. That's for PC, if you're on a Mac I'm not sure what your options are...

I've used OSM in the Sates and it works well. Detail is usually as good as Garmin mapping, sometimes even better. There are some gottachs though; things like speed limits are not included in the metadata, routing may well vary from that calculated using the Garmin mapping (not always a bad thing, just different). For pure navigation purposes it's great.

The LM mapping options for Garmin mapping and relative ease up updating (some may disagree with that statement) mean I have LM for Europe on both of my Garmins but OSM is still very useful/usable for other regions.

not sure how but i have similar on mapsourse but i am not up to speed how was doen but yes can be done

Yes Richie, the maps work in Mapsource.
I've been using them for years when travelling abroad outside Europe.
I'll give you a tutorial on how it all works when I'm in your neck of the woods if you haven't figured it all out by then :rob

i found need go into settings and make sure no avoid tolls are on. also route around bad spots via waypoints

but hey reason i like it so much is it takes me down roads that are is dog order
