Anybody had success with a freeview box / tv with indoor aerial use??

I've used some webpage that tells me that I've got a very strong signal due to my proximity to the Crystal Palace transmitter.

Yes I use freeview with an indoor aerial and it works just fine. I bought a cheapo 'outdoor' style aerial and hide it on top of a cupboard! Proximity to transmitter is key I think - I can see the Crystal Palace tower from my window ;-) although the only way to know for sure is to try it.

Pluck.

living "jus darn the rode" from the c.p.tower I cant get any decent picture with my indoor aerial unless its connected to my freeview box...

I used to live in a tower block in Limehouse with line of site to the Crystal Palace transmitter. The block had a communal aerial which broke one day and I discovered the signal with an indoor aerial was crap. By chance I met the man who came to repair the communal aerial in the lift and asked him how much amplification there was on the signal. He pointed out, very politely I thought, that with the strength of signal amplification wasn't a problem - he gave me 3, 6 and 9db attenuators to try out with the indoor aerial. With the 9db attenuator on the aerial I found the signal gave perfect results. Apparently the reflected signals from other points interfered with the main signal, the attenuator could cut the effect of those down withiout reducing the main signal toomuch.

Also explained why I could cause interference on my FM radio by walking round the kitchen.

Digital signals shouldn't have such problems with the high signal power as it will be less likely to be impacted by interference.

Too high a power is also a big problem with digital signals used for freeview... you have an working area of signal strength that you have to stay between.

digital signal is broadcast at about 17dB lower that analogue

you need between 45dB min and 70dB max for digital to work

I've just bought a Sagem freeview box and an indoor areild and iot works ok. Theres a Signal strength and quality meters display on the menu and it allows you to move the aeriel around and get the best signal. Not bad for £27 from Argos.

This is a temporary solution until I get my cable run in from the normal sky box.

Hi,

I used a Panasonic TUCT41 box (from Richer Sounds) with my Panasonic set and indoor loft aerial with acceptable signal BBC and signal cache/crash on ITV, so I added a Philex signal booster with variable db signal gain (see Tuned's comment) and used the on screen signal level bar to adjust/monitor what comes down the coax. Overall .. and for me .. its fine.
