We were in the Austrian Alps a couple of weeks ago staying in Obergurgl. I rode up Timmelsjoch and Grossglockner on the same day, a 400 mile round trip mostly in stop-start traffic.
Timmelsjoch at 8.30am was superb as was the decent into Italy, almost no traffic in the mountains at that time of the morning. That's now my favourite pass overtaking Stelvio.
The top of Grossglockner was a bit like Margate with hundreds of tourists, a restaurant, a tacky shop selling paperweights, fridge magnets and toy marmots. The glacier, like all others, is sadly dying, and looks like a dirty smudge. The roads were good though and not at all difficult.
