Fines for not having an unused single use breathalyser kick in on the 1st of March this year.

All drivers/riders in France are required to carry an unused breathalyser at the standard level which carries the NF (NormeFrancaise) approved certification mark.

It is recommended that two be carried, one can be used for self checking before driving/riding and a second unused one used for checking by the authorities if required.

Suppliers in the UK include www.halfords.com

8 ? :D

Not necessarily, there are discussions underfoot to question the legality of enforcing obligatory alco-testers on people who never drink for instance, so the French legal bigwigs are fighting it out in les halles. There are those who reckon the law will disappear quietly into obscurity without ever being enforced.
Funny enough, one paper I was reading held up the British system where drink-related deaths were reduced by an incredible amount, not by enforcing breathalysers, but by education and putting responsibility on the public themselves. They also said most of the French drink drive deaths were caused by people who were soo feckin pissed, they wouldn't need a breathalyser to tell them they were blootered.
Watch this space.

The breathalyser is not for use by the authorities, it is purely for self checking.

Or actually for checking if you can have one more for the road.

Debatable whether its cheaper to pay the fine.

As Franco says, there's a good chance it will never happen

So when I go to France next month, in May & June I won't need breathalysers, high viz jacket or reflective vest for when I'm on the bike, just a reflective vest for when I'm in the car?

Aye up Franco, whats the law in relation to high viz jackets? Is the new law now in for bikes that makes wearing them compulsary.

Cheers

In a word, no.

Bugger, I should have said, yes. If only to have made you either moan about it being an infringement of your bikers' rights or moaning about buying some or (better still) both :D. :beerjug:

Cheers Wapping. Ive got an old high viz jacket from work that i wear when commuting. Ill chuck it in my panniers anyway:beer:

what about if the jacket is dirty and not as reflective as it was when its new ?

who checks ?

who tests ?

its a minefield i tell you.

ps - all materials are reflective - just at different levels ;)

In many words, non :D It was supposed to come in on January 1st 2013, but has been put on hold whilst the Govt focuses the priority on primary causes of road carnage like alcohol and speed, or maybe both mixed :D

Helmet not jacket.

I guess the gendarme would assess whether it was reflective enough.

Gendarmes are not police and have powers our bobbies only dream of.
