French Motorway Speed Cameras

+1. Speed cameras are clearly marked in France ...

Not now they're not. They've installed a couple more on the A8 near Antibes peage, and they're grey, like the walls they're up against. Caught quite a few people apparently in the 2 weeks in been there. Most of the time they do have a small yellow/black band around them, but they're getting less obvious.
'Most' of the time, they put a radar warning sign on the road fairly close to where the cameras are. There are also numerous French sites which are kept up to date, for example here

That is what I meant - they have sign posts telling you that there are cameras ahead. The grey boxes are harder to see ....

Does anyone know what happens if you have changed your card after the "offence" but before the hire company is notified by the police?

Read your credit agreement. The bank that issued the card will honour any arrangement you enter into whilst the card was valid. So, even if it takes the hire company several months to bill you the bank will honour the payment as long as the credit card company can prove they have a valid agreement. The bank will then send you a bill in the normal way.

Surely the best thing to do is stick to the speed limit, enjoy the scenery and there will be nothing to worry about? :nenau No points, no fines no probs.

Nah that doesn't work either.
I got done a few years back in the works van. Legging it up the autoroute back to Calais, and didn't pay attention to the old Renault which appeard to be broken down on the hard sholder.
I gets to the next peage and the gendarmes are waiting. Get pulled over (they had guns, so had to comply  ) They took my passport and then led me to an ATM, to get money to pay the fine, gave me a receipt and my passport back and waved me on....

i take it if your in your own uk registered car or bike the fines don't follow you home ?
i have noticed over the past 10 years there are more & more speed cameras in france. when i first went 10 years ago we didn't see a single one, now when we go we must get flashed 10 times in our 700 mile round trip !
i'm going to le mans in may and hope the fines don't come through my front door after i return home

Normally not, but in your case they might just decide that you're taking the piss.

Go steady on your way to Le Mans,it's a nightmare on all key routes in and out of there on race week. They know the roads will be fully of brits in sports cars hooning about, take plenty of cash with you.

Should be tied to the numberplate, nothing to do with the telebadge. We've got a couple of the badges, and use them between cars and the motorbike. If you get flashed for speeding, the numberplate is the only thing they go on...

Rob

Rob, How do you avoid being charged the car rate if you use the Telebadge on the bike?

They used to give you a photocopy map to the ATM and keep your passport and driving license. Regular hunting ground for those trying to get to the ferry in a hurry

Beware of the massive increase of mobile units on the RNs They use Renaults in standard blue with a camera mounted at rear bumper level parked up at roadside. Hand held guns still used and Gendarmes don't wear hi-viz when hunting

Guest was done last year done for 119 kph in a 110 zone. 130 euros on the spot fine. ouch!!

I simply respect the speed limits, you are guests

Fixed that for you.

You'll note two problems about that article. Firstly its in the Daily Mail which means its probably bollocks. Second is that its from 2006 and it still hasn't happened.

The second probably proves the first.

+1 quite right become an urban myth but is definately no yet in force

Never had a problem myself, the motorways have a fairly generous 82mph limit (130kph) which probably means around 90 on the speedo - hard to keep below on the ZZR, I would imagine a doddle to stay within on a GS :nenau

Most camera's have a sign about 1/2 a mile before them, last year I noticed a lot of mobile sites being flagged up by Garmin, but these were for the most part on the bits where limits were lower.

Anyway as it is only money and no points it ain't too serious, just do not go ape on sportsbikes, at over 130 you could end up with your bike being confiscated.

There are lots more cameras on ordinary French roads now so I don't think that's going to help.

I was cycling in Germany a couple of years ago and saw a policemen with a speed camera hiding in a bush by the side of the road!

Hi Dave, you've just ot to go through the one for all vehicules, which tends to be on the right hand side of the Gare de Peage. They used to be the ones where they'd actually put a real person, but now, the vast majority of them have sensors which detect which type of vehicule you have and charge accordingly.
Sometimes though, (les than 5% of the time now) it picks up the bike as a car and tries to charge the car rate. If this happens, press the 'assistance button' Red with a yellow ring round it, and just shout a lot. Doesn't even matter if you shout in English, I've done it in broad Dundonian just to see what happens. Then the operator checks you remotely, see's that you're on a bike and changes the toll accordingly, unless of course, it's already beeped and the gate is open ;-)
It's funny how many tourists I see here, furiousloy pressing the button with the british flag beside it shouting in English. All those language buttons do is change the LCD discplay :D
