French Postcodes

Can anybody tell me how to use French postcodes on either mapsource or on the 2720 itself. I can't seem to get to grips with them.
i.e. "16100" what the hell is that?

Can't help on mapsource or 2720 I'm afraid but French postcodes have a 2 digit department code at the front followed by a postcode within the department.
In this example 16, which as it happens is where we live, is the Charente.
The department codes are in alphabetic order.

Easy

16 is the 'Department' - the equivalent of our counties.

The 100 is a subdivision of the 100 but it will probably cover a broad area. To the best of my knowledge the French do not have a post code system that goes down to a few yards on a specific street like wot we do, so specific routing via Mapsource will not work.

For instance, my parents' code is 84220 (84 for department Vaucluse, itself in Provence) and the 220 being Lord knows what as it covers a large area, centred roughly on the town of Gordes, a good 30 minutes away. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=842...iZCQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1

The first 2 digits tell you which Département the place is in (bit like what county) and the next 3 digits tell you where the post office is that within that Département which will do the delivery. So many nearby villages could have the same postcode.

So Département 16 is the Charente.

Thanks for the replies, I now understand the postcodes, but, I have great difficulty finding campsites from addresses. They never seem to be in mapsource like in the UK. Anybody got any ideas

Have a look at the POI file I added, 19,000+ European campsites, if the ones you're looking for aren't there then there should be one close-by.

Wedders, don't know anything about the campsite I'm afraid.
The town and area are fine without being anything exceptional I suppose.
I'd follow the google links as posted by young Wapping.
Sorry not much help really I'm afraid but if you post any interests or what you might be looking for on your trip I'll try and point you in the right direction.

French postcodes can cover up to 10 sq kms not the 3 or 4 houses as in UK.
We once ended up down a farm heading into the wild green yonder because that was where the center of Froggy post code was...
Far better to request the co-ordinates for where you are going as sometimes street names are not on sat nav.
This is based on personal experience of Wobblyboxing over there for last four years..
We use Camping car Aires [ Free which is just the price I like ] and we just put co-ordinates in, exclude toll roads and Roberts your Mothers Brother

Sadly no Caravans are allowed
but Van conversions are as well as all wobblyboxes
