No and yes.
Don't know if the reciprocal agreement is in place between France and ROI without looking it up, but they DO use mobile ANPR. And even if you're in another vehicle, any collision etc. could result in a tug

when travelling to france again make sure when booking ferry to slip one digit on reg plate so they are not waiting at ferry port for you

I got one last year. Anyone I spoke to in France said I should pay it as the law over there has a long memory. The chances of your name coming to their attention at some stage in the future may not be huge when you visit France next but it can happen. Easily done if landing there and presenting your passport, or being pulled over on the road for any reason. Pay it and put it behind you is my advice.

If you were speeding and I guess you were as you don't mention the fine is unjust....just pay it.

Job done, no future worries when visiting France, no sleepless night worrying about an early morning knock on the door :D and you might even get an inner glow knowing you did the right thing as you cruise along the French highways. :thumb2

John Snow while rushing to Zurich airport in a hire car, ran a red light. A few years later after returning to Switzerland, booked into his hotel and while in bed later that night, hotel security opened his door and a number of local police entered, arrested him and removed him, still in his pyjama's to the local nick untill he paid the fixed penalty fine for running the aforementioned red light. :blast

So

If the french can chase us back in the UK/Eire, then why does our government not do the same?

The UK government position is here (no idea what the Irish position is).

However, having driven 700 miles in France just two days ago, I can tell you that is no shortage of roadside gendarmerie with radar guns. Caught speeding, your wallet could be instantly lighter by several hundred Euros (or you may even find yourself walking!).

A friend of mine is a French national who lives in Hong Kong. Whilst visiting his parents in Paris, he was done for speeding, but as he was going back to Hong Kong he decided not to pay the fine.

About 6 years later, he was on a flight to Amsterdam, but due to bad weather, the flight diverted to Paris.

On arriving at immigration he was arrested and carted off to the cells, to remain there until the fine, interest and further penalties were paid.

A very silly boy.:blast

I ummed and ahhed about paying a £120 speeding fine from Sweden (for 129kph on the motorway!)

As previous posts have argued, I payed up as can't be bothered worrying if I'd be caught next time in Sweden (which is probably less likely than you returning to france)

Thanks for the advice , the fine is 67euro but being a tight basted did not want to pay, ( 96kmh in a 90kmh zone ) :(
but if they are going to drag me out of bed in me boxers and hold me in imigration i think i will pay up :eek:eek:
its just so unjust, :comfort :tears

Wonder if they're as diligent about burglars?

Ah - they don't have number plates so you can't just snap 'em and fine 'em.

how did they identify you?
