French Toll road payment

Is this not the same as gettiing the cash out?

Please note: The use of a Liber-t tag on a motorcycle is somewhat restricted. In order to be charged at the Class 5 rate, you must use the manual lane and hand your tag over to the operator to be scanned. You will be billed as normal. This is still better than fumbling for cash or payment card with gloves on. If you do use the automated lane, however you will be charged at the Class 1 rate.

The only problem is that many of the tolls are automatic and have no manned booths , so you will be charged class 1 instead of 5.

You have the option when payting at auto booths to select the class of vehicle, so I don't see that being the case. Still don't think it's going to save much time, and who the hell wants to use the autoroutes more than just occasionally anyway?

Which will make it impossible to use the dedicated 'Smart Tag only' lane which you drive thro' at 15 kph. It's where the time is really saved. Which is, of course, the purpose of the device, to save time for car drivers.

Anyone who want to go from A-to-B quickly and easily. Oh, and bods who post up on UKGSer saying: 'I have three days to see all the 'Must sees' in France in two days'. That's who. Hero bikers need not apply ;)

Waste of time on a bike. Either you pay the full car rate and race throught the Libert-t lane or stop and fiddle with the machine or negotiate with the attendant to get the bike rate - in which case why not just hand over the cash?

Paying at the toll is a chance to have a good stretch and short break that shouldn't be missed. Stop too far away to reach it, take gloves of and dismount, have a good stretch, get money from tank bag, pay up and then put money back in tank bag. Another good stretch before putting gloves back on, remounting, start bike and pull away feeling a bit fresher. The car drivers behind you don't mind, I always see them in the mirrors shouting encouragement!:D

It sounds long winded but in reality only takes about 90 seconds and I'm never on that tight a schedule.

Blokes who have had TPS dramas and need to blatt 250 miles at 110 mph to catch up Wapping and his merry men who abandoned us :thumb2

I now keep a credit card in the Tank Bag side pocket, I can get this in / out with gloves on, as they swipe the card in manned booths (no PIN to type or form to sign) it is quick and easy :thumb

And for how often they crop up I don't see it being a big issue, even as a regular motorway user - would rather spend a day on the motorways to get an extra day in the Alps than battle along slower duller roads just to avoid the motorway (and lose a day in the Alps)

Be a different story if I was retired or had loads of holiday (or even paid holiday) but as it is I am always on a tighter schedule than I would like - as I would like to not have a schedule at all!

Ah, the irony of calling a device that enables the state to force you to pay for mobility "Liberty".
On the other hand, if you don't use motorways, you don't have to pay for them:clap

Now, you see Rasher has it about right.

Ride up, give bod in booth card or use the auto function on the unmanned booths and ride off. Hardly hard, as the actress said to the bishop. As to the tosser who removes gloves, stretches, wanders about, pays, wanders back, re-dons gloves etc. No wonder the French think we are cnuts. Pay, go through barrier, pull in on left, stretch, pick wild flowers (if you must) inconveniencing nobody. Probably sees it as exercising his 'rights'

Probably best to pull over to the right Richard dear chap. ;)

/pedant mode off :)

There are some completely unmanned toll booths now - generally at smaller exits rather than the 'right across the autoroute' peages - that detect what kind of vehicle you are in. I used a couple last summer. Both detected I was a bike OK.

(Also used one in Italy a few years ago, near Turin. God only knows what I was charged there. It was so hot the sweat was running in my eyes...)

Well done you managed to miss the point completely as Wapping has pointed out. :blast

If your worried about paying car rates you could always buy one liberty card for four bikes :thumb2

As a law abiding citizen I always pay my dues, but my mate just followed me through a toll it Italy once (In autopilot) and when he realised what he had done spent the rest of the day paranoid Interpol would track him down - but we did note that you could probably squeeze about half a dozen bikes through on one payment.

If you don't want to remove your gloves which can be hassle if they are a bit wet and you end up pulling the lining out of a finger, have a little bag of cash ready, the toll staff are quite happy to sort out your money, lack of French needn't be a problem, hand signals and a smile will suffice.
