From an 1150 to 1200GS. Back issues

Look, I do realise I need to test ride one and am already sorting that out. I was merely asking to see if anyone else had noticed a big difference as
a) I really want a 1200 and am looking for positives
b) I love changing bikes and get quite excited/chatty on the build up.
c) I thought this was a place to talk about our experiences.

Funny old forum this.

Having owned both, I found no difference in comfort & preferred the 1150

We're all different & so are our opinions

All the comments IRO making the bike right for YOU are spot-on.
So are all the comments that no one bike/seat/handlebar combination will ever be the right combination for 'everyman'.

Don't be afraid to experiment and try different solutions; whether that means changing the seat height or changing components or whatever. That's the ticket.
Too many owners get sucked into thinking that since the initial purchase cost so much, the bike should automatically be perfect. This will almost never be the case - some people take a hard line on this, and suffer niggling aches and pains through the whole ownership experience.
No matter what happens, common sense must prevail: I once met a guy who'd taken a Triumph Street Triple on a coastal tour. He complained that he'd had massive wind blast the whole journey, and that his wrists and lower back hurt.

Before the GSAs, I owned an F800GS - apparently 'legendary' for having an uncomfortable seat.
On a 700 Km ride from Johannesburg to Dullstroom and back, it gave me no problems. And on a later December tour between Johannesburg, Clarens, Amanzimtoti and back, I had no more discomfort than I've had on any other bike.

When I did my first Saddlesore 1000 on my first GSA, my biggest problem was heat rash on my butt and the backs of my thighs. (This was at the height of summer, through KwaZulu-Natal.) Kinda felt like every hair in those regions was being ripped out at once.
I was able to solve 50% of it on the spot by putting the rear seat rail in the 'upper' position, thereby ensuring that I didn't have to 'push' backwards to stop myself sliding forward.
The other problem I had was a sore lower back. Entirely my own fault for carrying a backpack nearly 1700 Km.

Fiddle. And if it doesn't work, fiddle some more. :thumb

You sound like a decent sort, so here's some friendly forum advice:

Don't take people too seriously, and don't bite when the rude/obnoxious/pisstaking comments flow.

Have fun and avoid being drawn into an argument which ultimately nobody wins (against opinionated keyboard warriors). Ignore this at your peril, many have fallen before you and flounced off never to return.

Some veteran wind-up merchants prowl this site, you'll soon get to learn who takes the piss in a light hearted banter kind of way, and those that need ignoring (the best way to annoy a troll).

Oh, and read all about Hitlers favourite GS before daring to post a funny YouTube clip you just found, and NEVER ask questions about oil.

:D :thumb2

It's a good job my switch was 'off' rather than 'on' when I picked up this one :thumb2

:D

Well said:clap

You'll be at bursting point when you've been awed by the 1200’s awesomeness…. And find a receptive audience here; though they do only like nice comments, so take care.

Do you change your bikes before the aches and pains start or after? Maybe that’s a part of the problem? Perhaps, you don’t hang onto a bike long enough to get to really enjoy it?

See what I mean?......... :D

In the nicest possible way, that reply is a daft one.

It's a pretty straight forward question really - I know for a fact that the 1150 hurts my back, I do not have a 'problem back'. Is the riding position the same on the 1200 and does anyone have any experiences of it before I get round to booking a test drive?

Seems your pretty anti BMW anyway whereas I've put 60k miles on them in the last 5 years and see them better than Jap quality.

bye!

Put the seat in the high position and increase the preload. That will raise the rear and put some weight on your hands and away from your waist. Works for me plus makes the bike so much more flickeable

:D cheers.

I've got a full day of RT and GS testing booked for tomorrow. Hurray!

I had my 1150GS for about a year or so and did about 15k miles on it in that time so I reckon I'd kept it long enough to see whether or not I bedded in to the bike.

Anyway, I predict a purchase in the next 7 days so I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime if you know anyone who wants a decent 08 K1200s with luggage - point them my way please.

Noted and thanks.
