How do folks

Next year I`m having a jolly down to a villa near Beziers (about half way between Montpellier and Perpignon) and will be doing the route Napoleon and it ends at Cannes. What I`m wondering is instead of following the coast road round all the way is there any interesting roads and routes more inland that I could take?

Thanks

Lee

When you get to Cannes double back on yourself as far as Castellane and then head to the Gorges du Verdon. From there head towards Arles/Avignon/Nimes (Plenty to see/visit) via Manosque. From there avoiding the coast is more difficult. Inland you'll find the Cevennes, remote hills with great roads but they don't really go the way you want to. An hour spent with a Michelin Map is your best bet.
Alternatively, have a break in Grenoble and explore the Vercors or the Chartreuse mountains.

Couldn't have put it better myself. :thumb2

Michelin 726 map for the broad plan and all the Bis tourist routes. Then the 1:200,000 slae maps for all the detail. The ringbound book is the best value.

The Vercors is definitely worth a look but, as Gaulois suggers, it may well be too far out of your way.

Cheers lads :beerjug: I bought a 722 map to get a broad view and spot the green scenic routes but will look out for a ringbound book :thumb2

If you go to Avignon then go to Vallon Pont d'Arc and drop down through the Ardeche gorge. Then head for Florac and the Gorge du Tarn which will bring you out in Millau. The A75 is quite interesting from there on or I can give you a route through the Haute Languedoc to Beziers. Give me a shout when you are down here, I live 15 mins from Beziers.

Cheers Shenzi, will do :thumb2
We`re actually staying in a villa near, or even in, a village called Cabrieres thats south west of Clermont l`Herault on the D15 :thumb2

That is about 20 miles from me. I can show you lots of interesting stuff with some great roads in between, when are you coming?

I should hopefully be getting there on or about 18th of July :thumb2 Wife, no1 child, chum & his child are flying in :D So I think I did rather well being able to ride there :JB I might be able to sneak out for a ride or 2 through the holiday on the pretence of "getting some bread" :augie :D

That place is a bit MOFN, I hope you will have a car in addition to the bike. Send the wife and kid to the beach or Lake Salagou and that is you free!:D

We`re getting a hire car as they`ll be flying down otherwise it`s a long way down with 2 five year olds and they`d just want to follow me incase they missed something :D
Any reccommendations for some good days out with the kids?

At that age our kids were happy with the beach, Lake Salagou would be the nearest but the real beach isn't that far. Aqualand in Cap d'Agde is good but they may be a little young for that. There are a couple of fun fairs in the area, one that I can think of at Marseillan Plage with roundabouts and stuff. Lots of places to take them canoeing with a picnic. If you can get a roof rack on your hire car I will lend you a big Canadian canoe which would be great on Salagou.
During the summer there are lots of village fetes which are super for kids, I will get a list for you nearer the time.

These two would indeed spend all day every day beaching but it does get a bit tedious for us!
Aqualand sounds quite good but like you say we`ll need to check it out for suitability :thumb2
The canoeing sounds really good :thumb2 I fancy a bit of that & I`m sure the rest of them will :thumb2

i`m rather looking forward to it :JB

Hi Shenzi,

Cheers
