From London to Ulanbataar, Mongolia with Kudu Expeditions

A bit of a write up of the trip I did earlier in the year from London (well Swanage actually!) to Mongolia, with Kudu Expeditions.

It took us four weeks to ride there, most of us on Yamaha XT660 Teneres - will be of interest to anyone considering a long distance 'organised' trip!

We did the trip in June and I have been trying to get round to writing it up since I got back! There is about three weeks worth on the blog now and we are just about to enter Mongolia - so please start at the beginning and hopefully I'll get the rest up in the next week or so.

Hi Paul - yes, just a little 'disgruntled' !! - but still a fantastic trip despite the negatives. Wish we'd done it your way - certainly will be doing next time. You got any trips planned?

Not sure about sat navs in Russia - we were pulled up by police a few times and they never said anything. Not sure the mapping is particularly accurate though.

hi zed,
disgruntled, organised tour, seem to go hand in hand.
however, when you guy's arrived there was little doubt you'd had an epic adventure, so well done too you.
as for sat nav, we didnt have one. managed with maps bought en route, local advice and a silva compass. though truth be told we were often lost and never really knew where we were!! which lead to some great encounters.
youve heard the gay russian trucker tale, i hab similar with a siberian road gang!!
as for the next one, getting to mongolia will be hard to beat, been to africa, been to south america, so where next? loos like it will be alaska.

I ve just been exploring your blog and kudu's website.... Great stuff.... Thanks for sharing your experience! And making my feet itchy! :)

Gay russian trucker, Siberian Road gang...there appears to be a pattern emerging here! Was it you I shared the shower with at the Oasis? :ymca:ymca:ymca

Yeh, would never do an organised long distance tour again - even if it was properly organised - would much rather just set off with a small group of friends and make it up a bit as you go along. :beerjug:

Been on 7 now, take out the beer and wine and I think you will find the problem.:jager

Theses tours are very personal very much like your music collection.

My last one the T.A.T was wonderfull with Bilko at the helm, sometimes testing, but your experiance alone.

More deep Southern Blues than Classical.

Been reading your TAT adventures and it sounds excellent.

Not sure what you mean by 'take out the beer and wine' - are you suggesting that we should all be teetotal?! The basic problems were that the group was too large, the guy running it was inexperienced at running a trip of this kind (he had just bought the company) and the support vehicles were not fit for purpose.

Despite all the negatives it was a fantastic trip and a fantastic group of people. I would set off to repeat the journey tomorrow if I could - just that I would do it differently and not on an 'organised' tour.
 
Finally finished writing it up!

Well writing it all up was a damn sight harder and longer than actually doing the trip! Maybe I was sub-consciously not wanting to finish as that really does mark the end.
