From TC GS to Pan ST1300 to GSA TB

So that's what I've done and permit me some musing space as I rejoin active service on this fascinating madhouse called Ukgser.

Apart from some teething problems with cam sensor my 2010 GS was fantastically reliable for 18k miles. I was faster on it than on a sportsbike and loved the forward view and ease of tipping into corners. Eventually I became weary of the lumpy engine at town speeds and practicalities of a high seat and felt the need for a change. Hence the pan - super smooth, very low seat and great wind/ weather protection. After 18 months and 15K miles I was flying around on the Pan - it is so quiet and effortless at 90+ that unfortunately these speeds become the norm. But it wasn't really my fear of getting nicked that caused me to think of a change but a growing level of discomfort which is not something usually associated with Pans. The tank is very wide and the seat to footpeg distance small and it was doing something wrong to my spine. Plus a lot of riding up here is on twisty B roads and the Pan is a bit lardy - the relative lightness and ease of slow maneuverability of the GSA felt really good.

A test ride on a GSA soon made me realise once again the comfort that comes with a relaxed lower body seating position and with the excellent deal going on New GSA with panniers/ sat nav etc and a fair price from Richard at Alan Jeffries for my Pan the deal was done.

After 800 miles on the GSA I am generally very pleased with it. The TC engine is fast enough - it seems much smoother than I remember at town speeds so my previous issues may have been down to set up though it was serviced meticulously at a main dealer. The GSA ride is softer and more planted than I remember the GS but still plenty agile enough in the twisties.
I love the big tank - such a pleasure to be refuelling less frequently and it doesn't seem to upset the balance of the bike when full. I have fitted a nippy norman side stand foot extender which is helping me to get it off the stand on adverse camber. Cymarc crud catcher,NN mudsling and front mudguard extender all duly fitted. The side panniers did their job of propping it up when my missus with a bad knee got stuck getting off and fell down grabbing onto my shoulder and pulling me and the bike over.

It is not in the same league of effortless cruising at 80mph on motorways as the Pan but thankfully this is not the way I plan to use it. I am perplexed by a slight roughness in the exhaust note that is not there when cold but overall it seems smooth when riding so I am probably just worrying about nothing and need to pile on some miles to loosen the engine up. I do remember thinking that the previous GS seemed to get smoother at 5K and then again at 10k but how much of this is subjective heaven knows. I have got a sargent low seat on order which I am sure is going to help with getting more secure foothold when paddling the bike and long distance bumnumbness.

I did test ride a WC GS but was as bit less than convinced by the engine management which seemed to set you off like a rabbit but then ride you into treacle as the revs climbed. Too clever by half.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking but I do wonder if the last of the aircooled GSA 's may in future become regarded as a high point in the GS story, in the same way that the 1150's seems to be. Has some of the essential character of a Gs been lost in the move to higher performance water cooled bikes ?


Overall glad to be back in the fold and having retired this summer have some plans for long distance transcontinental rides simmering away very nicely.

Sorry can't post any pics as I am on holiday in spain but I guess you know what a triple black GSA looks like by now.

im on holiday in spain too,but ive brought the gsa tb with me,kids flew out the wife and i rode out 1500 miles to get here via massive central,millau,pryranees etc and the big gsa was brill,road tested the wc and didnt like it either.i will def get one of the last proper bikes before the wc completely takes over.
 
Once you've run it in, you could consider getting it remapped to enhance the part-throttle and mid range for improved smoothness??

Anyone recommended in the north west for this or is it overall worth making the journey south to Hilltop ?
 
80 mph cruising

After just coming back from a 1800 mile Europe tour it is a sad fact that travelling any faster than 80mph is not pleasant on single cam 1200 for a reasonable period of time. The noise and vibration is not pleasant, although running the bike on 98 ron does seem to make it run better.
If it was possible for 6th gear to run at least a 1000 rpm less than it does at 80 then I would never sell my GS.

I will change it for another adventure bike in 18 months time but it had better have a smoother engine.....

What is the new WC like a 80?

I find the TC smoother at 80 than at 70. By all accounts it is a big improvement over theSC but it does drink significantly more fuel at 70 than 80. If you want to do a lot of mway cruising at these speeds there is no comparison with the fully faired relaxed ride you get on a pan rt trophy etc. From my short ride I doubt if the wc will be a significant improvement over the tc at 80.

cruising at 80 2 up plus luggage my av fuel reading was 51.3 mpg,tbh it seemed as happy at 80-90 as it was at 60-70.bit of vibration noticeable but nothing that effected us to cause a prob,first days riding was 650 miles plus several 10 hour days after that.
 
I like you have bought one of these special deal GSA's and it really is a great deal . I guess most of the problems with a bike are ironed out by the time it is about to cease production . I am impressed with mine , and as It is now my only road bike , its going to get a lot of use . :thumby:
 
I had a WC GS for a day last week as my TC GSA was in for service. Felt more like a sports bike than a GS, went well, lots of engine management settings to wheelie or cruise with and the cruise control was a laugh!

Very glad to be back on my GSA and rode 300miles on Saturday though London twice in >30 degrees. GSA likes to cruise at 5k although this may change as I've only 1k miles on it.

I'm sure the RT's Pans etc are better at the cruising bit, but the GSA has the character in my opinion so a wise choice I'd say moving to the GSA - Congrats!
 
GSA

Yup, couldn't agree more, I love the engine on mine. I too tried the WC, and really wasn't impressed. The beauty of the last of the air-cooled ones is all the rubbish has been tossed out, and the engine engineered to perfection (almost). The wc's have a long, long way to go before they iron out all the little, but nevertherless irritating issues. Enjoy.
 
Ive fitted a Givi Airflow 330 screen with some tobinators to my Mk2 GSA. For me it's much the best screen Ive used on any bike. Even with the sliding part fully down is smooth and wind noise muted. Moved fully up its better for motorways.

Engine vibrations are an issue but so is wheel balance. Ive had a coarse vibe that I could not pin down that was particularly annoying above 4,500 revs in top gear. Recently I fitted some (black powder coated) alloy wheels and had the tyres fitted before the wheel bearings went in. Its shown the vibrations are aggravated by wheel balance much more than I'd ever expected.

Having no hub, the back wheel is harder to balance properly so well worth getting it checked out.
