Front Brake Lever

Help!

Out for a ride when one of the lads stopped me and said I had a problem as my brake light was flickering on and off all the time.
On checking everything out it turned out to be the front brake lever having a bit of play in it and causing it to come off the switch every time I hit a bump etc.
Stripped the lever down thinking there was probably a spring adrift.
No spring!
Looking in the manual there isn't a spring but it does tell you to check the rubber sleeve for stiffness or splits.
No splits (except a hole straight through which I assume should be there) but it is quite soft.
Do I just replace this rubber sleeve or has one of the screws come loose?
Any help would be appreciated as I want to get SWMBO on the back before going down to the GP.
(hasn't been on for a while as we have a 10 month old new GSer)

Looks like I'll just try putting a new rubber boot in and reassemble, hoping it works.
