Had the GS from new last July, rode out last week and everything was fine, stopped for a short break.

Climbed back on the bike and pulled the front brake lever as I lifted the bike off its side stand and noticed there was no pressure as I pulled back the brake lever. I was able to pull the lever all the way back to the bar grip with no effect on the front brake!

Got off the bike expecting to see a pool of fluid on the tarmac but there was nothing there. Tried pumping the lever to build some pressure but it did not work. (Fluid level was fine)

Called the breakdown recovery line and the bike was carted off to the dealers. Confirmed later by dealer as master cylinder failure.

I have searched the forum but cannot find any other postings for the same failure. My bike gets returned tomorrow with new master cylinder fitted but the dealer will not issue me any report for exactly what part within the cylinder failed (i.e.piston seals?) They tell me that there is no requirement for them to issue any report and that the item has been replaced as per the warranty

This is obviously a big concern and luckily did not happen when riding which would have been an interesting experience for me and my pillion

Would welcome any thoughts/advice?

(2011 model with dynamic package- approx 1800 miles)

There should of been another mention of it, as I'm sure I put it on a thread some years ago, as my brand new bike had the front brake master cylinder fail on it's maiden voyage home from the dealers.

I had an "oh shit no brakes" experience with my 08 RT a couple of years ago in Spain, only at around 130k!! Lever came straight back to bars. BMW changed lever, master cylinder and hose, but could find no fault!! Sold it when I got home.
It's also happened with S Yorkshire police bikes so I've heard.

Thanks for the replies, I am interested so see if this is a common problem or quite rare and it seems to be rare from feedback so far

Timpo do you know what part failed within the master cylinder?

Red1 Scary stuff! As much as I am unhappy with the failure I could not sell this bike, especially after a great blast round this morning. I take it no further problems with BM brakes for you?
