front brake pads - change

Just had the front wheel off to change the front tyre. However think I should also change the front pads as there is not a lot left on them.

I've no problem with the mechanicals of doing this - changed the rears a few times already. But is there any thing that needs to be done apart from pushing the caliper pistons gently back into place? Just don't want anything to go pop in the abs as a consequence of not doing things right

Just push the pistons back slowly.

Perhaps a smear of coppaslip on the backs of the pads and the caliper contact points?

When it's all back together, turn on the ignition and trigger the servo to push the pads up to the disc. (Apologies - if you've done the rears then you know this).

It really is that simple! I think you don't actually need to take the front wheel out or remove the calipers, but it does make it an awful lot easier to push the pistons back if you do one or the other.

You can put a bit of rubber grease on the pistons to help keep them moving freely. I've never done this myself, though.

Try and clean around the pistons before you push them back, it stops pushing brake dust and road salt into the seals, and a little bit of rubber grease around the pistons can't go wrong. Then a bit of copperslip on the back of the pads when you put them in

If you take the calipers off with the wheel in situ, it's so easy to let the caliper swing on the hose and hit the wheel, marking it or chipping the paint.
I've done it, more than once -doh! Now I use an old towel or similar to cover the wheel.
