Front cover corrosion pics

Brave man, once you start painting this...you have to paint that......then you are compelled to paint the other............before long the whole bike is done:eek:

why not just take it off before painting?

You could do I spose, it will need a new oil seal and a puller to get it off, apparently the alternator drive belt can be a bit of a bug**r to get on and off, the cover would need heating to get it back on, :nenau quick bit of masking, done job :thumb it seemed easier to leave in place

The cover is not that hard to get off and on.(the manuals make it sound so!)
Yes you will need a new Crankshaft seal.
Best thing to do is remove and take to a powder coater. Should only be about £25.
Good attempt though.

I thought of powder coating (for about 10 seconds:D) and decided it is not worth the hassle (i,m quite rural here) it involves taking off the case which I,d already decided not to do for reasons above, I,m pretty sure this fix will last, but thanks for your suggestion:)

So etch primer IS available in aerosol cans then? That Simoniz Satin Tough Black looks damned good even if it looks silver.:thumb

I used wet and dry, then some old Volvo silver touch up paint that was sitting around at the back of the garage. Five mins. work in total, looks fine. Don't worry about it, and if it needs doing again in six months what the hell.

Looks like you have done a fruity job on that cover... Very nice indeed. :thumb

just remember to use grease that stops the electralitic action of the stainless bolts and ally engine casing or you will need more than a puller and heat gun to take it off in the future:thumb

Your right :thumb2 , and I did, I used "Alumslip" to prevent dissimiler metal reaction.

one of the first things i did was remove the foam - and it appears there is no drain channel to allow and water out from behind the cover - the foam has a channel but the plastic front cover doesnt - well done BMW

The carbonfiber one, has:thumb but it's a bit expensive, although it looks great:clap

Extended Warranty

Anyone know if the BMW extended warranty covers this problem? Bought it a month ago for 54 reg bike and it has just started to go...thought I'd avoided the dreaded rot (FS365, fender extender, rigorous cleaning etc).

bmw extended warranty does not cover corrosion.

Heres the finished result, complete with stainless fixings & fender extender, and minus the foam insert !

If my car was all corroded in the engine bay which it is'nt it is a little Korean car that cost less then 7grand had 5 yrs warrenty and has not broken down. Which the BMW has twice. The bike should not corrode as they do for the money they cost even my old suzuki never had that much corrosion and again that was cheap. BMW build quality is crap which they never used to be so keep on moaning and let those who think that this is acceptable accept it. Because to not complain they BMW are taking the piss big time IMHO. rant over .....next.

I've just replaced my std exhaust for a Remus so it doesn't have the link between the two downpipes. As I was fitting it I wondered if the heat from the std system's link pipe has any influence on the corrosion of the plate?

Probably doesn't but it's just a thought.

Great job Easyrider, we need more photos of the finished job though! :thumb2
