Just found the left brake disc on my 1150gs has started rattling. The bobbins are worn so will order some new ones from Motoworks. My question is the bolt holes in the disc seem slightly elliptical - is this normal or are they worn as well?

You can sometimes get away with just turning the bobbins around 90 degrees so that the worn part is now in the (normal) ellipse of the disc bolt hole and a new face is holding the disc.
If you have an ABS ring then that may have worn as well so you might have to double up the wavey washers to eliminate the play and rattle :D

Thanks-turning the bobbins round did cross my mind but I ordered a set yesterday. (ouch!) Luckily mine is non-abs otherwise it might have been a bigger ouch!

Also check the pad pins.
I did the whole bobbin and washer thing but still had the rattle.
Turns out my pad pins had a bit of wear and they caused the rattle from the front end.

You need to check the ends of the mounting posts that the disc bolts to. Originally the disc was against the alloy posts and would eventually wear away the end of the mounting post letting your discs rattle. BMW answer is a thin washer that goes between the disc and mounting post stopping any damage.

r1150gs front disc

i just bought an 1150gs last week. I was given a bag of new bolts and washers for the right disc that didn't have new bolts put on yet.
while washing the bike I found the disc with the new bolts fitted had lots of side play when wiggled. I think he forgot something!! I am looking to get a manual, guess the Haynes one is ok?
