I've been away from GS's for a few years, my last was s 2010 GS TC, and have just bought a new GSA TB.

The bike is great and I'm enjoying it, BUT, I do seem to be getting a lot of "noise" that seems to be coming up through the gap around the forks.

It's there when the bike is stationary, so it's not "wind" related and it gets louder with road speed but doesn't seem to be engine speed related.

I can only describe it as a "dry whirring / vibration" type noise - am I being paranoid or do they all make the noise?

Any suggestions?

The stationary bit, increasing with road speed, is quite an odd one. Is the lady next door posting notices about her lost cat? Have you looked inside your front mudguard?

I agree..
NOISY..
I've done a fair few miles recently & had to get my mounded earplugs out in the end..
The road noise from the Anakee is a tad too much..
Coupled with the general noise amplification coming up the rough the fork area..
Then there's the bloody noisy engine..
all adds up to less enjoyable ride, but still great bike.!

I also think it's your Anakee 3 tyres, because mine do the same, but not when you're stationary - are you sure about that bit? Personally, I find the tyres ok and the noise, once you know it's just tyre noise, isn't sufficient for me to ditch them early. It will be a consideration when they're due for a change though.

I'm currently on holiday with a mate who tests bikes for a manufacturer in the R&D department, they binned the idea of using the Anakee 3 due to the noise.
Sounds like a tractor tire.

I went to Garmisch recently & Michelin were displaying a nice new on/off road mix tyre, I was considering them for my T9 Turban but I would hesitate now due to the road noise from the Anakee..

It's only the Anakee III that's noisy

It sounds to me that the OP is describing the usual grinding mechanical noises that come from the LC motor

It's the Anakee 3's. Bin 'em.

Just done a run up to Nordkapp on my new GSA with Anakee 3's on and although not a fan of them at first they've actually been pretty good. Will still probably go back to Trail Attack 2's when home mind. :thumb2

Someone posted info. about adding sound deadening material around fork area. Worked for him! Also riding with visor partially open amplifies the noise.

My R1200R TC was the same.

In for its "running in" service today - I didn't realise that the WC clutch is at the front of the engine and thats what the "whirring" noise is.

The volume increasing with road speed must be the tyres adding to the clutch noise - it is a noisy bike, I'll try and find that "sound deadening" post.

Always been a "Tourance" guy, on my previous GS's and the Varadero but may go to full road tyres when the Anakees need replacing, I'm too old to do any off-road serious enough to need a dual sport tyre and road tyres are OK for dry hard packed dirt and gravel roads - unless the great collective tell me different!

Jeez, you think Anakees are loud....

Try karoo 3's think of a washing machine with a dry bearing on full spin .. :)

Bought a new GS Triple Black 4 months ago. Done 2000 miles and absolutely love the bike , except for the noise coming up from between the tank and the forks. Mentioned it to the dealer and they advised that the noise would reduce once the engine is run in! So much for BMW dealership knowledge. Anyway, finally proved it was the tyres last night. Had been aware that the noise was worse on some days but not worked out why. Then , last night, it became obvious, probably helped by the fact that the roads were wet. The noise suddenly disappeared, then reappeared as I rode over a short stretch of new, smooth tarmac. Don't know why I haven't noticed this before, but it was the first time out in the wet so maybe this made a difference. IT was a revelation though. The road noise reduced significantly over that short stretch of road and proved it was the tyres. Am amazed how much noise the Annakee 3's make. Makes me wonder why BMW fit them. Question now, which tyres to fit to get rid of this dreadful noise?

They fit them because they are cheaper that any other suppliers tyres

Any other tyre will get rid of the noise unless you go more aggressive?

My suggestion would be to go with Conti Trail Attacks for long life and feel :thumby:
